To celebrate the International Chinese Day in 2022, the Confucius Institute at the University of Lisbon held the first "I Love learning to Chinese" Chinese character writing competition and the second "I Learn Chinese Story" Chinese Writing Competition awards ceremony on April 21, local time. 68 students from the Faculty of Liberal Arts of the University of Lisbon, the Confucius Institute Social Class and the Confucius Classroom in St. Thomas submitted entries. After strict evaluation, a total of 1 first prize, 2 second prizes and 4 third prizes were awarded in the Chinese Writing Competition. The Chinese character writing competition is divided into two groups, the adult group has a total of 3 first prizes, 4 second prizes and 6 third prizes, and the junior group has 2 first prizes, 3 second prizes and 5 third prizes. The Chinese and Portuguese deans of the Confucius Institute presented certificates and prizes to the winning students.

Awards are given to the winners

Chinese Dean Wang Jincheng congratulated the winning students. He noted that 20 April this year marks the 13th International Chinese Day, and UNESCO organizes a variety of online and offline celebrations. Chinese, one of the oldest languages still in use to date, has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of multicultural development, cross-cultural exchange and lasting peace. He told the students present about the legend of Cangjie character creation and the history of the development of Chinese characters, and said that this year, while holding the second Chinese writing competition, a Chinese character writing competition was also added, with the purpose of hoping that more students would like Chinese characters and learn Chinese well.

João Barreiro, president of the Confucius Institute, said in his speech that the ages and learning goals of Confucius Institute students are different, but the enthusiasm for learning Chinese is the same. In recent years, the number of students in the Confucius Institute has increased year by year, reflecting the Chinese which has become more and more loved and valued by people. He stressed that mastering the writing of Chinese characters is an important part of Chinese learning. To this end, the Confucius Institute specially organizes calligraphy competitions and writing competitions, aiming to encourage students to strengthen the practice of Chinese character writing and improve the aesthetic level of Chinese characters. He said that the achievements of the students are inseparable from the hard work of the Chinese teachers of the Confucius Institute, and the excellent teaching team is the basic guarantee of teaching quality, thanks to the diligent work of all the teachers of the Confucius Institute.

Daniela Sousa, a liberal arts student who won the first prize in the Chinese Writing Competition, read her entry aloud and shared her experience of studying Chinese. She said that learning Chinese is not only a foreign language, but also a way to understand Chinese and Chinese culture. Chinese is an art that she has mastered Chinese made her a treasure. Carlos Nunes, a social class student who won the first prize in the Chinese character writing competition, said that he has longed for the East since he was a child and wants to learn the Chinese Chinese culture, and it is the Confucius Institute that has helped him realize his wishes. Matilde Ho, a liberal arts student who won the second prize in the writing competition, is a mixed-Race Chinese-Portuguese who lacked a sense of belonging to culture since childhood. After studying Chinese at university, she gradually found her sense of belonging as she learned about Chinese culture, and this competition gave her a further understanding and identification with Chinese culture.
