Have modern people really read less? Who stole your reading time? Is reading still "useful"?

On the occasion of World Book Day on April 23, Dangdang.com and Analysys jointly released the report "Reading Ten Thousand Volumes" | National Reading Insights 2022" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report"), which gave answers to a series of reading questions that contemporary young people care about.

In April this year, the report conducted a survey of 2,000 Chinese mainland residents aged 13-52, and conducted in-depth research and insight into the emotional state, reading status, and reading value of Chinese people.

The report pointed out that there are more young people who love to read than expected, and nearly 30% of users keep reading for more than 2 hours a day, of which more than 50% are post-90s;

Many readers believe that reading can alleviate anxiety, and long-term reading can not only help readers broaden their horizons and enrich their inner feelings, but also help control their emotions. Even if it is only a limited time on the commute, reading a book for a while can be a certain degree of "resistance to adversity".

The group of people who read for more than 2 hours a day accounted for more than half of the post-90s

It is worth noting that there are perhaps more young people who love to read than they think. The report shows that from the perspective of the frequency of reading, nearly 60% of users with reading habits read more than 3 days a week; from the perspective of reading time, 38.4% of users read for an average of 1-2 hours a day, and nearly 30% of users maintain more than 2 hours of reading per day;

Among the people who read more than 2 hours a day, the "post-90s" and "post-00s" accounted for 30.3% and 23.3% respectively. It can be seen that around us, many young people are "secretly working hard".

Among the types of books frequently purchased by readers, literature/fiction/art books are still the most popular, followed by management/inspirational/success books. With the "post-90s" gradually entering the ranks of "bao dad and mother", the demand for children's books in this group is more obvious, and the "post-00s" buy more teaching and auxiliary materials.

Choose a short "immersive" reading on your commute

If going to work, socializing and other activities already occupy a lot of time, where else can contemporary "hit workers" read? According to the report, respondents in first-tier cities and new first-tier cities prefer to read during commute time, and most of them prefer to read books when taking transportation such as subways, buses or planes.

Previously, the "Monitoring Report on Commuting Time consumption in Major Cities Across the Country" released by the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design showed that office workers in the north, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen spent an average of 41 minutes commuting per person. In 36 key cities across the country, more than 10 million people commute to work for more than 60 minutes.

Although this squeezes out personal leisure time, from another point of view, long-distance commuting has become a short and valuable "immersive reading" scene for them.

The more you study, the higher your income will be? not necessarily. But the higher the income, the more books they tend to read. Through the survey of the average annual reading volume, the report found that there was a clear positive correlation between the level of income and the size of the reading volume.

Open the door to a new world of "non-utilitarian" reading

The report shows that in terms of the degree of relief of anxiety caused by reading, 50.4% of the respondents believe that reading has a palliative effect on their anxiety.

Writer Liang Xiaosheng said: "Reading is the most worthwhile thing to pay, and if you read more than one good book, it will have an impact on you." In other words, people improve their cognitive abilities through reading, and they can better cope with anxiety and stress caused by workplace and health problems.

Reading is pleasant to the body and mind, especially when it comes to opening the door to a new world of "non-utilitarian reading." Luo Xiang, a professor of "Internet celebrity", believes that the purpose of reading has utilitarian and non-utilitarian purposes: the former is to succeed, and the latter is to correct the former.

He proposed that utilitarian reading is of course essential, learning a good profession as a tool for making a living in the future, but more importantly, non-utilitarian reading, which can make you feel real happiness.

It is worth mentioning that even on a working day with only two hours of free leisure time, 48% of respondents are still willing to spend more than half of their leisure time on reading.

The report shows that among the books recommended by survey users who have read more than twice, "Ordinary World", "Alive", "Journey to the West", "Pride and Prejudice", "Notes on Tomb Robbery", "The Great River Goes East" and so on are all casual reading books of literature and fiction, and there are fewer functional books.
