【The Story of the Word】

One Chinese character a day - red

Spring nights are rainy

Tang Du Fu

Good rain knows the season, when spring is happening.

Dive into the night with the wind, and the moisturizer is silent.

The wild trails are dark and the river boats are alone.

Xiao looked at the red wet place, and the flowers were heavy in the official city.

Translation: Good rain seems to pick the time and fall in the spring of all things. Accompanied by the Japanese wind, crept into the night. Fine and dense, moisturizing the earth and everything. Thick dark clouds covered the field paths, and only a little fishing fire on a fishing boat on the riverside radiated a ray of light, which was particularly bright. When dawn comes, the damp soil must be covered with red petals, and the streets and alleys of Jinguancheng must also be a scene of thousands of purples and thousands of reds.

Interpretation: This poem was written in the spring of the second year (761) of emperor Suzong of Tang. After a period of exile and migration, Du Fu finally settled in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, due to the drought in Shaanxi, and began a relatively stable life in Shuzhong. At the time of writing this poem, he had been living in Caotang in Chengdu for two years. He personally cultivated, planted vegetables and flowers, interacted with farmers, and had a deep affection for spring rain, so he wrote this beautiful poem describing the rain on spring nights and moisturizing all things.

This poem meticulously depicts the characteristics of spring rain and the scene of night rain in Chengdu with great joy, and enthusiastically praises the spring rain that comes in time and moisturizes all things.
