24-28 weeks pregnant, be sure to do a glucose tolerance test!

At 24-28 weeks of pregnancy, pregnant mothers are assigned by doctors to do glucose tolerance screening tests (glucose tolerance tests), mainly to screen pregnant women for gestational diabetes.

Purpose of glucose tolerance screening

During pregnancy, especially after about 5 months, your baby's growth begins to accelerate, and your body must produce extra insulin to meet your baby's needs.

If your body can't keep up with this change, you may develop gestational diabetes.

24-28 weeks pregnant, be sure to do a glucose tolerance test!

Because during pregnancy, due to various factors will lead to abnormal glucose metabolism of mothers, and gestational diabetes is one of the factors that may lead to developmental malformations of the fetus, there are also a variety of adverse effects on mothers, but mothers with gestational diabetes do not necessarily show corresponding symptoms, and even fasting blood glucose is normal and not easy to pay attention to, so pregnant mothers must do glucose tolerance examination.

The harm of gestational diabetes Gestational diabetes may lead to abnormal fetal development into macrosomia, premature babies, fetal malformations and so on.

Pregnant mothers are also prone to complications of pregnancy hypertrophy, eclampsia, placental abruption, cerebrovascular accidents, and urinary tract infections. Pregnant mothers with gestational diabetes have too much amniotic fluid, early rupture of membranes and high incidence of preterm birth, and macrosomia will also increase the chance of dystocia and soft birth canal injury, resulting in prolonged labor and postpartum haemorrhage.

How to do sugar tolerance?

Preparation before the examination:

Eat normally three days before the examination, and fast for at least 8 hours after dinner the day before the examination to the next day.

Inspection steps:

1. Keep an empty stomach, cooperate with medical staff, draw blood at the vein, and then send it for examination immediately.

2. Dissolve 75g of glucose powder in 300ml of water, draw intravenous blood to detect blood glucose once before drinking sugar water, and drink the previously dissolved glucose water within 5 minutes.

3. From the first sip of drinking, the timer is counted, and the blood glucose is drawn once in the next 1 hour and 2 hours respectively.

4. In order to ensure the accuracy of the test results, after taking sugar water, you should rest and do not move around at will;

Take sugar water to the end of the whole blood collection, do not eat any food, such as pregnant mothers feel really uncomfortable after taking sugar water, you can consult the doctor, follow the doctor's advice to drink boiled water in moderation.

What do you think of blood glucose indicators?

According to the new GDM diagnostic criteria: glucose tolerance test at 24 to 28 weeks: 75 g of glucose orally on an empty stomach, measure blood glucose levels on an empty stomach, 1 h, 2 h;

Fasting does not exceed: 5.1mmoL/L

Do not exceed 10mmoL/L after taking sugar for 1 hour

No more than 8.5mmoL/L after taking sugar for 2 hours

GDM (Gestational Diabetes Mellitus) is diagnosed if any of these items meet or exceed the upper limit.

What should I do after diagnosing gestational diabetes?

Mothers who are detected with gestational diabetes should not be nervous, carry out diet control and treatment under the guidance of doctors, check on time, and monitor fetal health.

Diet management

The first measure is dietary adjustment, that is, a reasonable allocation of three meals a day, limiting the intake of sugar and lipid foods, eating more fresh vegetables; standardizing meal sharing under the guidance of doctors

Monitor blood glucose

If there is an abnormal condition of glucose tolerance, purchase a blood glucose meter and test strip at a regular pharmacy under the guidance of a doctor for blood glucose monitoring.

Keep exercising

Increase the amount of activity, that is, have a certain amount of time every day for exercise, such as walking, yoga, etc., try to avoid sitting for a long time, and maintain appropriate weight gain.

Take medication as directed by your doctor

If the blood sugar control is not good, seek medical attention in time to adjust and carry out further treatment under the guidance of a doctor.
