Tian Shiguang (1916-1999), Gongwei, originally from Leling, Shandong, lived in Liulangzhuang, Xihaidian, Beijing. Shi Chengzhang Daqian, Zhao Mengzhu, Wu Jingting, Yu Feimin, Qi Baishi. In his early years, he studied at the Beijing Academy of Fine Arts, specializing in Chinese painting of flowers and birds. He has long been engaged in the creation of flowers, birds and landscape paintings, inheriting the fine traditional techniques of the Song and Yuan dynasties of double hook and heavy color brush flower and bird painting, and endowed it with a new spirit of the times, and is a famous painter of flowers and birds in the modern brush of the mainland.
Mainland flower and bird painting became an independent painting slightly later than landscape painting, and its development reached its peak in the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties, and reached its peak during the Song Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty. The two major veins of flower and bird painting are: "rich and rich outline color filling method" and "light and wild boneless painting method". The painting of flowers and birds by the sketches of the Gong pen to the Ming and Qing dynasties was impacted by the literati freehand paintings, and gradually became extinct in the same year. Tian Shiguang was still insufficient while studying the boneless flowers and birds of gongbi, at that time he often went to the Forbidden City to visit ancient paintings, believing that ancient paintings were heavy red and heavy green, so he had the ambition of the double hook and heavy color flower and bird painting technique of the Everbright Song and Yuan School and immersed himself in studying it. After a little bit of pondering, he constantly understood the creative ideas and techniques of Song and Yuan outlining painters' subtle observations and meticulous depictions, and finally mastered the traditional formula of double hook and applied it to painting creation.
