Kusama hissed, and the sound was sparse

——Talking about Hu Shi painting worms

Text | Cui Dazhong

Hu Shi is one of the most important literati painters in contemporary China. Like the traditional literati painters, he has a profound cultural accomplishment. He lived a quiet life in one of his houses far from the hustle and bustle of the world: he did not care about worldly things, only immersed himself in learning, and used calligraphy to paint and draw his main coursework. Observing his life, in addition to gathering friends, drinking tea and discussing the Tao, pushing cups and changing cups, that is, reading at the desk, writing and painting. He cruised in his own world, using a pipe of pen, exhaustive, expressing emotions, and unconsciously living as a human immortal!

I remember last winter, I wrote a joint gift: care for the night insects chirping, the moon through the curtain, Fei Qing lantern half a lamp, for the next day to save small insects and cicadas, low groans and short sighs! Looking back at the jade pot to buy wine, fragrant in the South Garden, with a bald pipe, and the kings write near the water Yao Mountain, the place is round. Although my gift is slightly longer, it is also appropriate to describe its essence.

Hu Shi has an open-minded and relaxed personality, advocates temperament in painting, and is also rigorous in pen and ink law. Whenever he talks about painting and art with people, he often begins with the sentence of "Zhongyong": "The destiny of heaven is sex, the willfulness is the Tao, and the cultivation is the teaching"! Man's natural endowment is called "sex", acting according to nature is called "Tao", and cultivating according to the principle of "Tao" is called "teaching".

Hu Shi said so and did the same. His works originate from temperament, become nature, and moisten reading and seeking reason.

Hu Shi likes to read, and is also good at reading, so he is good at titles. Each painting has experience, reading has a feeling, must be the title of the painting, known as "Longxi said painting". Nowadays, the "Longxi Saying and Painting" has been viewed in a big way, and it is enough to collect and print it to nourish future learning. This is the double result of his reading and thinking about painting. Hu Shi had been friends with Zhu Xinjian since he was young. Zhu Xinjian was a talented man in Nanjing, and his casual and uninhibited paintings had aroused the "desire for expression" of many painters of that era, and under its influence, many painters in that period suddenly had a lot to say, especially at the beginning of reform and opening up, due to the cultural revolution and other political trends that had been suppressed for a long time, suddenly the awakening and opening up of human nature, bathed in the sudden art spring, in the face of the artistic situation of a hundred flowers, the artist thus had an irrepressible desire to express. At that time, Hu Shi, writing and painting with letters and pens, willful expression, flowers and birds, landscapes, beautiful women, on paper, the country and mountains, happy in his heart, write at will.

Throughout the 1990s, Hu Shi was active in the group of "new literati painting" painters. History will always remember the "1991 New Literati Painting Exhibition and Seminar" undertaken and organized by Hu Shi in Linyi as the host. As a member of the new literati painter cluster, Hu Shi and Ji Youchen, Zhu Xinjian, Bian Pingshan, Yang Chunhua, Chen Shouxiang and other painters traveled together, reading and reasoning, going south and north, and their works were unbridled, willful, and brilliant.

Around the beginning of this century, Hu Shi began to stop doing random dot paintings that were instructed by talents, but gradually turned to chia tai's deep painting thoughts and spiritual expressions. At this time, the Chinese art world is no longer as passionate as it was at the beginning of reform and opening up, and has entered an era of deep thinking. At this time, Hu Shi' temperament of pen and ink and calligraphy has undergone great changes, and the rules and tones have begun to immerse themselves in the picture.

Painting is a process of finding oneself. After all, Hu Shi was born in Langya, a sacred place of Confucianism. Its bones and blood flowed with the blood of the Confucian true vein! His paintings are no longer abusive and wild, and Zhu Xinjian's shadow has disappeared in the painting, from temperament to painting method, increasingly showing his own existence! Around 2007, after some thought, choice, and obedience to the opening of the heart, Hu Shi set aside landscapes, figures, flowers and birds, and began to concentrate on the study of painting insects. This painting is 10 years, 10 years, Hu Shi has no distractions, accompanied by insects, spring and butterflies fly together, autumn night and insects singing together! South Garden Dream, Kusama Life, Hissing Cut!

Hu Shi painted insects, all over the ancient law, inherited the tradition of painting insects for thousands of years, and even more with the spirit of today's times throbbing, freehand, writing hearts, expressing the spirit, with the opening of a generation of painting insects new wind, achieved their own, a generation of grass insect painting everyone stood in the forefront of Chinese painting art. Langya Holy Land, the place where Wei and Jin flowed, today there is another Hu Shi, since the heavens and the earth are pregnant, and the context has its own!

Looking at hushi painting insects, get a "rational fun". Literati people's hearts are painting, and it is difficult to reason with fun! Gein is natural and fits the right tone! Rationality, including rationality and fun. In terms of "reason", Hu Shi's painting worms are combined with painting theory, literary reason, reason, psychology, ethics, Yang Ming mind, out of hand. Since the development of Confucian culture in ancient Qilu, Hu Shi was born in Si, grew up in Si, and between pitching, he has cultivated a righteous wind and justice, and the grass sings, which must also be correct and sound. As far as "fun" is concerned, Hu Shi paints insects, gets the fun of pen and ink, the ink of the literati, the natural fun, and the fun of life. Interesting, natural, funny, funny, funny. Literati painters, the text is the heart, the fun is the table, the boring is tasteless, the appearance is dull, the fun is extinguished and the text is gone. The unity of reason and fun, the rationality and fun, the unity of integration, the rationality of the reason, the fun of the rational, will get one of the important ends of the literati painting machine!

Hu Shi painting insects, has not been a form of objects, between pen and ink, pitching a lifetime of feelings, writing love and writing the heart, out of Confucianism, the same as the interpretation of the Tao, pay attention to reason, get the heart of the painting is really interesting! Look closely at the Hushi painting insects, the heart is clear, and the "rational interest" is dissolved. A Langya person, a Confucian body, has the three ambiguities of "rational interest", and is definitely a literati who has achieved the Tao! Pin Hu Shi painted insects, rational and interesting, with a sigh. Hu Shi painted insects, Confucian Heavenly Reason dissolved in the grass life, not at all unhappy, it is indeed the Heart of the Tao! Sigh with two. Nowadays, when modern science and technology are obedient and the hearts of the people in society are precarious, there are Hushi and Caojian chanting the right tone to comfort people's hearts, stir people's hearts, strengthen people's hearts, and promote the right path! Sigh three times.

Looking at the Chinese painting world, although the famous artists are cloudy, there are not many Chinese painters who pursue "Zhengda weather" and "painting the right tone" like Hu Shi. A painter with achievements should come from the tradition, the pen is straight, the ink is right, the text is right, the qi is right, the heart is right; not impetuous, not clever, not opportunistic, not manneristic, the pursuit of the big weather, the big realm, the big interest! Langya's hometown is really the domain of Lingxiu, and Wei Jin's wind and bones still exist, nourishing people and moisturizing their hearts! Gyeonggi, cultural convergence, the pulse of the times is exciting, moving! Hu Shiyou traveled between Langya and Kyoto, Cheng Huaiguan Dao, asked the pen end, adhered to the aura of heaven and earth, wrote worms and wrote hearts, the right tone was burning, the grass was chirping, and suddenly he saw the Tao, full of paper and elegant fun, a piece of life.

Looking back at history, from Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty painting grass worm illustrations in "Erya" to the beginning of cicada and bird painting in the Southern and Northern Dynasties period, from the five generations of Huang Xiao's "Sketching Grass Worm Diagram" to the modern Qi Baishi painting grass worms. Painting worms, accompanied by the development of painting parallel. Tracing the source and tracing back to the source, we will see a history of iconography of painting insects, a cultural history of painting insects, and a process of painting insects that continues to develop and has an orderly vein.

On the road of Chinese painting, Hu Shi chose to paint worms, which was the choice of his heart, and it was also the choice of his understanding of the history of painting. The grass and insect paintings in history are mostly works of gongbi, and the imagery of gongbi with vitality has been highly matured in the Song Dynasty when "sketching Zhao Chang". Although the Yuan Dynasty Qian xuan had freehand grass worms in the world, since the Ming and Qing dynasties, and in modern times, freehand grass worms have not made great progress, and grass worm painting as a secondary painting family under the flower and bird painting family has not yet matured and perfected. As a painting family, grass worm painting, its ink freehand, did not form a highly mature style like the brush grass worm. This leaves a broad space for the modern freehand development of grass worms. It was hu shi who saw this that he chose to paint freehand grass worms and take elephants for grass worms to convey the gods. Of course, the reason why he chose to paint grass worms, a more important reason is that he loves grass worms, caused by temperament, and his heart is so.

"Ten years of grinding a sword, crossing the sky is reckless Kunlun". Hu Shiyi wrote grass worms, should follow the basic rules of literati painting, inherit the same method of calligraphy and painting, attach importance to the use of pen and ink and subtle expression, strive to write the life of the grass, and create a new ink grass worm schema. From the shape of the brush to the freehand expression, Hu Shi's pen has formed a set of personality-colored freehand grass worm styles; it has made a fruitful contribution to the modern new development of the grass worm painting family!

In my opinion, Hu Shi's painting of grass worms is a new achievement of Qi Baishi's grass worm painting. On this point, we can simply explain it further from the following aspects.

First of all, in terms of artistic methods, Qi Baishi's painting insects are mainly based on gong pen and part-time work belt writing, and Hu Shi is based on freehand brushwork.

Second, in terms of specific performance, Qi Baishi pays attention to writing shapes and pursues between similarity and dissimilarity. Hu Shi, on the other hand, took the image by writing the gods, and pursued the image of the wind god of the bone force structure. Among them, the pen and ink treatment of grass worm joints, antennae, and leg claws is particularly visible in bone strength.

Third, in the use of materials and formal language, Qi Baishi paints insects with ink and color, while Hu Shi paints insects mainly with ink expression.

Fourth, in the primary and secondary relationship of the content of the picture, Qi Baishi's grass worms are mostly matched by flowers, while Hu Shi's grass worms are independent of the protagonist of the picture, and large freehand flowers are the scenes of grass worms.

Fifth, in the pursuit of artistic aesthetics, Qi Baishi pursues classical aesthetic interest, and Hu Shi is an effort seeker of modern aesthetic interest.

Sixth, in terms of aesthetic interest and the specific expression of meteorological patterns, Qi Baishi's grass insect paintings pay attention to vitality, and strive to increase the vitality of the picture in the classical interest. Hu Shi's grass worm painting pays attention to the transmission of modern consciousness, and strives to express and strengthen the pen and ink beauty of grass worm painting, and the literary interest of cultural beauty and sexual spiritual beauty!

Finally, it must also be pointed out that Qi Baishi was a generation of literati painters who moved from folk art to literati painting, rooted in the fertile soil of folk culture, paying attention to folk and sublimating folk beauty, and achieving his painting art. Hu Shi, on the other hand, began by studying the paintings of the literati of previous generations, pursuing the popularity and cultural interest of painting, paying attention to culture and the modern expression of the cultural aesthetics of the times.

From the above aspects of the simple words, it can be roughly known: the contemporary painter Hu Shi, who inherited the mantle of the Tang and Song dynasties, and the old man Yu Xu who was close to Baishi, created a new French style of grass worm painting, opened up a new realm of grass worm painting, and conveyed the new concept of grass worm painting! A branch of modern literati painting, the grass insect painting family, with the insects, has entered a new world!

On the occasion of the publication of the "Hu Shi Painting Worm" collection, it is a preface.
