What health conditions are optimistic related to?

Laura Kubzansky, a professor of social and behavioral sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health, co-authored a new study that found a link between optimism and blood pressure. The study found that those who tested the most optimistic at the start of the study had a 22 percent lower risk of developing high blood pressure than those with the lowest optimism at a three-and-a-half-year follow-up.

The study's subjects were nearly 300,000 healthy U.S. military active-duty soldiers ages 17-65. Soldiers are more likely to develop high blood pressure due to the associated stressors in the military, which can lead to many cardiovascular health problems such as high cholesterol.

There are also studies that suggest that optimistic people are associated with healthier lipid profiles.

Another prospective cohort study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology demonstrated that increased optimism and reduced risk of mortality were statistically significant, including cancers (lung, breast, colorectal and ovarian), heart disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, and infections.

Participants in the study were about 130,000 female registered nurses aged 30-55. Importantly, the findings remained unchanged after tight control of potential confounding factors, including sociodemographic characteristics (age, ethnicity, marital status, educational attainment, etc.) and depression (diagnosis of depression and depressive symptoms). Although mortality decreased after adjusting for health status or healthy behaviors, the overall risk of death and optimism remained statistically significant.

There are also studies that show that individuals with higher levels of optimism have better immune reactivity after vaccination, and changes in optimism levels can predict changes in immune function over time.

Why can optimism prevent disease?

Given past research, researchers believe that optimism enhances people's ability to regulate emotions and behaviors. More optimistic people are less likely to smoke and drink heavily, and are more likely to exercise, eat healthier foods, and get higher quality sleep.

Some studies have shown that optimism is associated with lower levels of inflammatory markers and higher levels of serum antioxidants. Therefore, perhaps there are more anti-inflammatory activities or higher levels of antioxidants, thus preventing high blood pressure or other adverse cardiovascular events.

What factors are there to do with optimism?

Genetic factors: Optimism seems to have about 25-30% heritability, which also means there is a lot of room for change.

Education level: Optimism has a lot to do with education, as people with higher levels of education tend to acquire more problem-solving skills.

Periodontal Health: Studies have shown that periodontal health affects their smile patterns and the quality of life associated with their smiles. Poor periodontal health may prevent adults from expressing positive emotions, which in turn can affect their self-concept and social interactions.

Optimistic living conditions can affect our health in the long run. Optimism is related to genetic factors, but most factors can be changed.
