Cd Projekt Red, developer of the Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077, announced in a short blog post that a sequel to The Witcher 3 is in development. The new game has not yet been officially named The Witcher 4, but it is said to open up "a new legend in the series."
The Wizard sequel will be used by CD Projekt Red using Unreal Engine 5 instead of Cyberpunk 2077's Redengine. The studio has been using the engine since the release of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings in 2011. ReDengine is still said to be used for cyberpunk 2077 DLC.
Epic Games, the creator of Unreal Engine, will also be a core partner of CD Projekt Red, a "multi-year strategic partnership." CDPR says it will fine-tune the new generation of game engines to fit the open world it knows. However, while Epic Games will be a key partner for CDPR in the future, the Official Wizarding account confirms that there are no plans to make Witcher 4 exclusive to the EPIC Games Store on PC only.
The studio emphasizes that they don't currently have a development timeline or release date for The Witcher 4, or even a rough release window.
Many fans speculate that the protagonist of The Witcher 4 is Geralt's adopted daughter Ciri, who will not be confirmed until more official information is released.
