Nintendo President: VR is not mature enough, and I am not optimistic about Meta and metaverse

After Meta announced the name change and vigorously developed the "metaverse", it received opinions from all walks of life, mixed reviews.

While the "metaverse" has been hyped around the world, many people have expressed different views on it. Although it has been followed by major enterprises, many companies and individuals believe that the "metacosm" does not seem to be as perfect as imagined.

Former president of Nintendo USA (2006-2019), Reggie Fils-Aime saw Metaverse in the making, but he didn't believe Meta would cause a stir. Because he questioned Meta's current definition of a metacosmection and said Meta itself is not an innovative company.

Speaking with Bloomberg's Emily Chang during SXSW, Fils-Aime shared his thoughts on the current state of the so-called metaverse and discussed why he doesn't believe Facebook is currently on the right track to lead the way.

"They either acquired interesting things like Oculus and Instagram or quickly followed people's ideas, and I don't think their current definition will work out," Fils-Aime said. Fils-Aime expresses his own definition, seeing the metacosm as a digital space in which to make friends. Fils-Aime believes that the digital future that many are working towards will be led by "small companies that are really innovating" and companies like Epic that are doing "really compelling" things.

In the context of Fortnite and Roblox, Fils-Aime says Metaverse already has large cultural events where artists interact with fans, bringing together many different digital experiences through one currency. He wrote on Twitter that he favored the Metaverse concept developed in Roblox or Fortnite.

The arrival of the metaverse has changed many people's views on the future of the Internet, and Meta, as the first company to propose the development of the metaverse, their vision is to create a freer and more open virtual world.

Meta did not always make acquisitions in the process of developing its metaverse, and Meta attracted a lot of talent after the acquisition of Oculus, which was able to develop Oculus to where it is today. Meta may not be an innovative company, but Meta will definitely be the promoter of the metaverse.

In addition, Meta's hardware efforts and current VR hardware did not impress the former president of Nintendo. As far as he knows, about 20 million VR headsets have been sold across the industry. He tested almost all of the VR headsets on the market, but none of them convinced him that virtual reality was ready for the mass market. In contrast, he believes more in AR and uses Pokémon Go as a success story. But it doesn't mention that Niantic's huge success has so far been a flash in the pan in AR games, and that AR glasses face more technical challenges than VR headsets.

Mario AR Racing is an AR game, but the actual experience is not amazing, and the handling distance of more than 5 meters may cause problems such as signal loss. Ar, while bringing new experiences to games, has less content and doesn't create stickiness for players to use for a long time.

However, Fils-Aime's assessment is in line with Nintendo's position in recent years that AR is a more attractive gaming technology than VR. Aside from experiments like children's toys, labo VR and Super Mario Kart VR machines, the gaming giant hasn't shown any major ambitions when it comes to VR.

At present, VR needs to use a VR headset to experience, and AR games only need a camera plus the game to achieve. However, the vr/AR two technologies themselves are oriented to different groups, so there is no real competition between the two technologies, as for which of the two technologies is the future, Sina VR believes that both technologies are the future.

Our views

Fils-Aime's views on VR, metaverses, and meta are not unfounded, and the vast majority of companies that currently hype metaverses do not even understand metaverses, but rely on metacosms to amass wealth. It is precisely because of the emergence of such enterprises that more people think that the metacosm is just a tool of capitalists.

In the face of the metaverse, we should put our minds at ease, and we should not blindly invest in the face of various metaverse projects. With the continuous improvement of the meta-universe, there will eventually be a number of enterprises that will flee into the wilderness, and shareholders should polish their eyes when buying so-called concept stocks.

Fils-Aime believes that VR is deficient, and that's true. But the development of VR has never stopped, since the outbreak of VR in 2016 has experienced too many ups and downs, but now VR has entered a stage of rapid development, Pico, iQiyi, NOLO and other enterprises' efforts we can see for all to see.

At present, VR and AR have been applied in various fields, VR/AR can bring more convenience, but enterprises need to continuously optimize, in order to popularize VR/AR worldwide.
