After the outbreak of war, millions of people in Ukraine either fled their homes or joined the fighting, leaving large tracts of land uncultivated. Ports carrying wheat and other grain from Ukraine to the world were also forced to close. At the same time, the Russian side that started the war also affected food exports because of the western sanctions.
Today, about 30 percent of wheat comes from these two countries, 20 percent of corn comes from these two countries, and about 80 percent of sunflower oil comes from both countries. The impact of the crisis is therefore global.
About 80 percent of Lebanon's wheat imports from Ukraine, and Lebanon consumes between 6,200 and 6,300 tons of wheat per year. Last year the country imported 5,200 tonnes of wheat from Ukraine, with the rest coming from Russia, Moldova and Romania.
Although the global supply of wheat has not yet been interrupted, food prices are soaring to record levels. If the war continues, countries that rely on Ukrainian wheat exports could face food shortages starting in July. #国民策划 #
