Chongqing Grotto Temple is rich in resources, significant value and widely distributed, according to the special survey statistics of the Grotto Temple, there are 716 cave temples and cliff statues in Chongqing, and the Dazu stone carving is the only one of the world cultural heritages.
Dazu stone carved Fengshan Temple Moya statue statue Buddha Dao unity statue area, originally carved in the Southern Song Dynasty, Ming and Qing Dynasty have been added carvings. Under the action of long-term natural strength and human factors, fengshan temple rock mass fracture development, statue weathering, paint shedding, biological erosion and other serious diseases, it is urgent to carry out conservation research, to provide theoretical basis and technical support for later protection and restoration.
In this context, in order to comprehensively improve the basic and theoretical research level of Dazu rock carvings protection, promote the scientific and technological protection and preventive protection of cave temples, and at the same time respond to the requirements of the state to strengthen cooperation with countries along the Silk Road for cultural heritage protection and actively carry out "Asian cultural heritage protection actions", based on the three-party friendly relationship and common development needs of the Dazu Institute of Rock Carvings, the Department of Cultural Relics and Museums of Fudan University, and the National Institute of Cultural Property of Nara, Japan, the three parties are in line with the principle of "resource sharing, complementary advantages, and common development" Principles strengthen cooperation and promote Sino-Japanese cultural exchanges. In September 2021, the three parties discussed issues related to Sino-Japanese cooperation in the protection of Dazu rock carvings, and China and Japan reached an intentional technical cooperation agreement with the Statue of Moya of Dazu Rock Carvings at Fengshan Temple as the research object. In November 2021, the Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Cultural Heritage approved Sino-Japanese cooperation in the protection of the Dazu Stone Carved Fengshan Temple. The cooperation plan will be carried out in phases, of which the first phase of the cooperation plan will last for 5 years, from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2027.
After the signing of the agreement, the experts and scholars of the three parties will take the Statue of The Cliff of Dazu Stone Carved Fengshan Temple as the specific research object, and cooperate in environmental monitoring, preservation evaluation related on-site investigation and indoor experiments, weathering disease mechanism research, restoration and protection material research, laboratory construction, talent training and exchange, international academic conferences, etc., which will provide reference research results in the field of stone cultural relics protection research.

Prior to this, Dazu Rock Carvings carried out many international cooperation projects, and cooperated with Italy to build the "Chongqing Dazu Stone Cultural Relics Protection Center", which is the first cultural relics science and technology protection project in Chongqing to cooperate with foreign countries.
