A university in Shaanxi unearthed the tomb of a Tang Dynasty princess, and the crown in the tomb made experts curious, and shocked experts after restoration

In November 2001, workers from a construction team were digging foundations for a university dormitory. Suddenly, a worker dug out some wood. How can there be wood in such a deep underground? The worker thought that the wood could only be on the coffin, because in Xi'an, an inconspicuous stone on the road could be a treasure left over from ancient times. He continued to dig, and he did not expect that there was really an ancient tomb underneath.

So the workers quickly told the captain of the construction team the news and asked him to inform the experts of the cultural relics department. As soon as I heard that there was an ancient tomb in Qujiang, the relevant personnel immediately rushed to the tomb and carried out a rescue excavation of the tomb. The size of this tomb is very high, covering more than 300 square meters. As the excavations progressed, the appearance of the tomb gradually appeared, and the coffin decayed with the passage of time, while the bones inside still existed. There are also a large number of funerary items inside, Tang Sancai, gold and silver jewelry, jade and so on.

What surprised archaeologists the most was that the skull of the corpse bone wore a complete crown on it, although it had been scattered, but the crown used almost all the materials that the Tang Dynasty could use: turquoise, amber, pearls, rubies, agate, etc., and there were bright blue feathers of emerald birds under the gold ornaments. The crown is 25 cm long and 42 cm high, and its colours are brilliant and luxurious. Later, experts from China and Germany repaired the crown using excavated ornaments, and its beauty and luxury shocked experts.

So, who is the owner of such a luxurious tomb? Archaeologists know the true identity of the tomb owner according to the epitaph of the tomb and consult the relevant history books.

It is reported that this is the grave of Li Yuan, the fifth generation granddaughter of Tang Gaozu Li Yuan and the princess of the Tang Dynasty. Her husband was Xuandelang and Hou Mochen, a scholar of Naohiro Bunkan, and was a member of the Xianbei clan. Xuande Lang was a civilian official under the Seven Pins, and had no office, and his official position was equivalent to that of a university professor today.

According to the epitaph, after learning that Li Qian and Hou Mochen became relatives, they were very affectionate. The two lived in Chang'an Shengyefang, a place located east of the Imperial City, west of the Xingqing Palace, where Emperor Xuanzong of Tang handled government affairs, and belonged to the exclusive residence of the princes and nobles. Li Kuang died on the seventh day of the first month of the 24th year of the new century, at the age of 25.

How did Li Qian die? Archaeologists speculate that Li Qian had just given birth to a baby before his death, based on the epitaph "Zi Yu Swaddling", and she was likely to die in dystocia. After Li Qian's death, Hou Mochen wrote a deep mournful message in his epitaph, expressing his thoughts for his wife and his own sorrow. In order to make up for his guilt of still correcting official documents on the wedding night of the two of them, Hou Mochen spent a lot of money and energy to create this luxurious crown. In this way, a poignant and touching story was left behind.
