Iranian man beheaded his 17-year-old wife and paraded the streets to avoid punishment for "honor crimes"?

Authorities suspected Mona Heidari, 17, of being killed by her husband and brother-in-law in the southwestern city of Avaz, and police subsequently arrested the two men.

Iranian newspapers and social media expressed shock and anger at the killing, and many demanded social and legal reforms.

Such cases are known in Iran as "honor crimes." Honour killings are common in some parts of Iran, largely because of the light sentences imposed on such crimes under local law. Article 630 of the Iranian Constitution provides that a husband who witnesses adultery and commits murder is exempt from punishment.

In the past two years, about 60 women have been victims of honour killings, some of them as young as 10 or 15 years old, and many perpetrators have not been brought to justice because most families have not filed a lawsuit.
