What is the future of F1 Racing DRS! Aston Martin Technical Supervisor talks about the 2022 Technical Rules

In order to increase the opportunity for entanglement in various workshops, FIA introduced the "Drag Reduction System" in 2011, which caused mixed reviews, and under the drastic change of technical rules in 2022, Andrew Green, technical supervisor of Aston Martin Team, believes that DRS should gradually go historical in the future.

As mentioned in the citation, DRS is one of the FIA's proposals to increase the chances of entanglement in each workshop, a system that allows a rider within 1 second of ahead to adjust the angle of the rear wing within a specified route to reduce acceleration resistance, thereby increasing the chance of getting tangled with or even overtaking the car in front.

While DRS has continued to prove its efficacy in the races and allowed fans to see as much hand-to-hand combat as possible in the 2017-2021 rule cars that emphasize air efficiency, the opposition also said that this overtaking method is only artificial and does not fully demonstrate the driver's skills in hand-to-hand combat.

Therefore, the FIA drastically changed the design thinking of the car in the 2022 rules, and as the 2009 rules prohibited teams from making a big fuss on the air power kit to increase the possibility of hand-to-hand combat, which also made the future of DRS another discussion.

Andrew Green, aston Martin Team's technical supervisor, believes that DRS is still necessary in the short term and says that DRS should go into history in the near future:

"I don't think the efficacy of drs will be diminished by this, but it will be based on the FIA's overall study of the track layout, and if the track layout and the car design are developed according to the FIA's expectations, the DRS usage area may be reduced or even eliminated completely, which I think is a good thing."

As for why DRS is still necessary in the short term, Green said this is based on the different levels of knowledge of the 2022 rules between teams.

"At the beginning of the season we should see that there are still significant gaps between the teams, some teams should show strong competitiveness, but some teams can't do it, but as time progresses, the cars of each team should be able to gradually show the performance they deserve."

In the press conference of the new generation of racing cars "AMR22" held by Aston Martin Team on the night of February 10, Beijing time, fans can finally see the DRS structure of the new generation of racing cars.

Both ends of the DRS are located in front of the folding angle of the upper end version (i.e. the position of the sponsor), and the middle bracket and adjustment string are used as the opening and closing mechanism, since the previous FOM technology demonstration film does not show the air flow direction of the new generation of racing cars when the DRS starts, so it remains to be seen how this will affect the offensive and defensive battles.
