On February 10, Beijing time, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced the list of newly elected academicians and overseas academicians in 2022, with a total of 111 academicians and 22 overseas academicians on the list. The reporter noted that Zhang Hongjiang, chairman of the Beijing Zhiyuan Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, was elected as an overseas academician for his outstanding technical contributions and leadership in the field of multimedia computing. At the same time, 111 academicians and 22 overseas academicians were selected, including Space X founder and chief engineer Elon Musk.
Being elected to the National Academy of Engineering is one of the highest professional honors for engineers in recognition of "individuals who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education." The new academicians will officially join at the annual meeting on October 2, 2022, when the total number of academicians will reach 2388, and the number of international academician members will be 310.
The National College of Engineering is the highest academic body in the U.S. engineering community and one of the four national academic institutions in the United States (the other three institutions are the National Academy of Sciences, the National College of Medicine, and the National Scientific Research Council). Three major awards in engineering – the Russ Award, the Gordon Award, and the Charles Stark Draper Award – are selected by him.
It is understood that Zhang Hongjiang is a top scientist in the field of artificial intelligence research, before joining Zhiyuan, he served as the chief technology officer of Microsoft Asia Pacific R&D Group, the president of Microsoft Asia Engineering Institute, and also served as the CEO of Kingsoft and other corporate executives.
Previously, in the direction of artificial intelligence, Shen Xiangyang, a Chinese scientist and double-appointment professor at the Institute for Advanced Study of Tsinghua University, was elected as a foreign academician of the National Academy of Engineering in 2017.
