New academicians of the American Academy of Engineering: Musk, Zhang Hongjiang was elected

On February 9, 2022, local time, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced the list of newly elected academicians and overseas academicians in 2022, with a total of 111 academicians and 22 overseas academicians on the list.

The list includes a number of influential figures in the tech world, including:

Elon Musk, founder and principal engineer of SpaceX, who made breakthroughs in the design, manufacture, and engineering of reusable launch vehicles and sustainable energy systems;

Zhang Hongjiang, chairman of Beijing Zhiyuan Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, was elected as an overseas academician for his outstanding technical contributions and leadership in the field of multimedia computing;

Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella was also selected for advancing enterprise computing infrastructure as a cloud service and playing an international leadership in social technology systems and practices.

Being elected to the National Academy of Engineering is one of the highest professional honors for engineers in recognition of "individuals who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education." The National College of Engineering is the highest academic community in the U.S. engineering community and one of the four national academic institutions in the United States. Three major awards in engineering – the Russ Award, the Gordon Award, and the Charles Stark Draper Award – are selected by him.
