On February 9, local time, the website of the National Academy of Engineering announced the list of newly selected academicians in 2021. A total of 111 academicians and 22 overseas academicians are on the list. Eight Chinese scholars were selected.
The National College of Engineering is the highest academic body in the U.S. engineering community, and being elected as a Member of the National Academy of Engineering is one of the highest professional honors for engineers in recognition of "individuals who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education."
This list reflects a great deal of "inclusiveness", and the inductees are: Musk, the founder of SpaceX, who only has a bachelor's degree, Dr. Zhang Hongjiang, chairman of the Zhiyuan Research Institute, and Satya Nadella, chairman of a large company (Microsoft).
Zhang Hongjiang has outstanding technical contributions and leadership in the field of multimedia computing
Musk, a reusable launch vehicle, has made a breakthrough in the design, manufacture, and engineering of sustainable energy systems
Satya, advancing enterprise computing infrastructure as a cloud service, is an international leader in social technology systems and practices
In addition, Professor Cao, Jian (Cao Jian) at Northwestern University; Fang Daining of Beijing Institute of Technology; Liu, Bin (Liu Bin) of the National University of Singapore; Yan, Yushan (Yan Yushan) of the University of Delaware; Yang, Taiyin of Gilead Sciences; Chao-hsin Lin of Boeing Company of the United States; and Cai Kequan of National Taiwan University were also selected.
The new academicians will officially join at the annual meeting on October 2, 2022, when the total number of academicians will reach 2388, and the number of international academician members will be 310.

Biography
Chairman of Beijing Zhiyuan Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, former chief technology officer of Microsoft Asia Pacific R&D Group, partner of Beijing Source Code Capital Investment.
He received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Zhengzhou University and his ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Danish University of Science and Technology.
He once served as CEO of Kingsoft, CTO of Microsoft Asia Pacific R&D Group, president of Microsoft Asia Engineering Institute, vice president of Microsoft Research Asia, and became the first batch of "outstanding scientists" of Microsoft.

Henry B. du Pont Chair of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Delaware, previously served as Founding Associate Dean for Research and Entrepreneurship at the University of Delaware, Department Chair at the University of California, Riverside, and Senior Staff Engineer/Program Leader at AlliedSignal.
He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Science and Technology of China and his master's and doctoral degrees from the California Institute of Technology.
He has received the Nanoscience and Engineering Forum Award from the American Society of Chemical Engineers and the Energy Technology Sector Research Award from the Electrochemical Society.

He is mainly engaged in the theoretical, computational and experimental research of advanced materials and structural mechanics.
The macro-microscopic deformation and fracture theory of ferroelectric/ferromagnetic materials is expanded, and it is applied in finite element analysis and device design.
