On Feb. 1, U.S. Republican senators urged the Biden administration to fill the "loophole" in the export controls imposed by former President Donner de Trump on SMIC, China's largest chipmaker.

In a Letter dated Jan. 31, senators said tightening controls "would fill an important loophole in preventing China from using U.S. technology to advance its modernization program."

The U.S. Department of Commerce and SMIC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Separately, Reuters reported in December that the Biden administration had not yet decided whether to block the sale of more U.S. chip-making equipment to SMIC, but raised the possibility of further discussions with allies.
