From 1987 to 1996, Augustine rose to prominence in the comic book world as DC's Senior Editor, editing major productions including Justice League, The Flash, and Wonder Woman, while also working closely with Wade as co-editor and then as a screenwriter.

Augustine also broke new ground for DC as the author of Batman: Gotham City under the Gaslight, the first "otherworldly" work in DC's previous series focused on "multiple realities." Along with co-author Wade, Augustine also redefined justice league origins in JLA: The First Year, adapting the team's earliest adventures into a modern setting. He also worked with Wade again on a long, fan-loved serial on The Flash, which brought Wally West to the forefront of the DC Universe.
