The Ontario couple in Canada charged a gas bill for 3 months, which was as high as 43,000 yuan
A couple living in Orillia, Ontario, felt incredible when they received their 3-month gas bill, which cost nearly $43,000.
Candace and Bob Shaw said they had not received bills from Enbridge Gas since September last year. The bill price they paid at the time was very low — about $26.25, whereas usually their bill was $80.
Candance said she called Enbridge in December when they didn't receive bills in October and November. The gas company told them there was something wrong with their accounts.
She said the company sent someone to read the gas meter numbers and then told them they would send the bill in January.
Candance said she couldn't sleep through the night after receiving a gas bill from mid-September to mid-January, and was shocked. Because the bill amount is actually 42,625.24 yuan – about their average service fee for 41 years.
The couple, who are in their 70s, said gas bills used to be a bit more in the winter, about $200 or so. But it's a far cry from the average monthly spending on this bill.
Enbridge said the billing figure was clearly incorrect, which could be related to problems with the new billing system.
"We introduced a new billing system in July 2020, and there may be some cases where the data from the previous billing system is not transferred correctly."
The company said it would remove the bill from shaws accounts and apologized for the inconvenience.
