Seagate announces shipment of a 22TB ultra-high capacity SMR mechanical hard drive

IT House, Jan. 30 (IT) -- Seagate confirmed in a recent conference call with financial analysts and investors that it has begun shipping 22TB hard drives to customers, according to Tom's Hardware. The new 22TB hard drive is the most powerful model on the market and uses tile-mounted magnetic recording (SMR) technology to deliver ultra-large data capacity for large-scale data centers.

Seagate CEO Dave Mosley reportedly said on the earnings call that Seagate's strategy provides manufacturing flexibility and improves overall cost efficiency in the common platform family, with CMR product capacities now reaching 16TB to 20TB and SMR product capacity expanding to 22TB.

IT House reported that last December, Seagate Technologies announced the launch of the new Seagate Galaxy Exos X20 20TB and Seagate Wolf IronWolf Pro 20TB hard drives, both based on traditional magnetic recording (CMR) technology.

According to reports, the Seagate Galaxy Exos X20 Enterprise HDD is designed to improve storage capacity and rack space efficiency, with 4.16 milliseconds of low latency and repeatable response, enhanced caching capabilities, significant performance improvements, and performance is three times higher than solutions that use only read/write caching. In addition, the Seagate Galaxy Exos X20 offers up to 285MB/s Continuous Data Transfer Rate (SDR).
