Readers familiar with the Seagate hard drive series should know that the Coyote series is a product designed for NAS, which is divided into two categories: Coyote and Coyote Pro. Comparing the two, the Coyote Pro has greater capacity options, more bay support, better performance, longer mean time between failures, higher workload rates, and longer warranty periods, so it prefers a commercial NAS environment for commercial, enterprise, and creative professionals.
In the magnetic recording method that many consumers pay attention to, the Seagate Coyote Pro series adopts cmR traditional magnetic recording technology. Compared with SMR stacked tile hard disks, the most obvious advantage of NAS hard disks using CMR technology is undoubtedly a lower failure rate, and the composition of RAID does not have to worry about frequent failures dragging down the entire RAID group. Seagate has also applied a number of NAS-specific features to the Coyote Pro. For example, it supports AgileArray technology, which has dual-plane balancing and time-limited failure recovery functions, which can provide better performance in multi-bay systems. At the same time, the hard disk has a built-in rotation vibration (RV) sensor, which provides better protection in multi-bay systems and keeps the hard disk running stably for a long time. The Seagate Coyote Pro features a workload rate of 300TB/year and a mean time between failures of 1.2 million hours. Its dedicated IHM Seagate Coyote health management software, compatible with most mainstream NAS brands, can actively monitor the operating environment, find potential problems, use adaptive algorithms to manage hard disk-related performance parameters, and warn in advance before hard disk problems occur.
The Seagate Coyote Pro series currently ranges in capacity from 4TB to 20TB, and we're testing a 20TB version. The prototype adopts a 10-disc package process, SATA interface, specifications of SATA 6Gb/s, speed of 7200RPM, and equipped with 256MB of large-capacity cache.
Performance testing
In the testing section, we conduct it in two test environments. The first is to test on the PC hardware test platform built in the MC evaluation room to see the performance of the Seagate Coyote Pro 20TB NAS hard drive under various test software, so that the measured results can better reflect its real performance. The second is to use NAS to carry out some software and file transfer tests, because the transmission speed under NAS is mainly affected by the network environment, so this part of the test results are more for reference.

Let's take a look at the test results of the Seagate Coyote Pro 20TB NAS hard drive on the PC hardware test platform. In the CrystalDiskMark benchmark, the Seagate Coyote Pro 20TB NAS hard drive performed well. In official information, the nominal maximum continuous transmission speed of the 20TB version is 285MB/s. In the actual test, whether in the continuous read speed of Q8T1 or Q1T1, it has reached or even slightly exceeded the nominal speed of 285MB/s, and the continuous write speed has exceeded 270MB/s. This is better than most 7200rpm mechanical hard disks, because their continuous read and write speeds are mostly in the range of 200MB/s to 250MB/s. We also tested the read and write performance of the Seagate Coyote Pro 20TB NAS hdd with a high-performance SSD in real-world applications. The test results are very close to the benchmark, in the transmission capacity of up to 22.1GB of a single video file, reflecting the continuous read and write performance of the application, the Wolf Pro 20TB NAS hard disk read and write speed of 281.2MB/s, 280.1MB/s, basically full of theoretical values, can transfer large files at high speed.

We also carried out the operation of transferring the Watchdog: Legion game folder and the folder with 1000 photos stored. Judging from the results, Watchdog: Legion is obviously a large collection of files, although its capacity reaches 56.6GB, but its composition file is small, only 246, so the hard disk can still read and write its speed of 282.8MB/s and 275.9MB/s, respectively.

The folder with 1000 photos stored and a capacity of 3.38GB has a significant decrease in the actual transfer write speed, which is 134.8MB/s, but the read speed is not affected, or it can reach a high level of 282MB/s.

In addition, we tested the Performance of the Seagate Coyote Pro 20TB NAS HDD in software applications through PCMark 8 storage performance tests consisting of multiple real-world applications. The results are quite satisfactory, with a total score of 3159 points, which should be among the best among all the mechanical hard disks tested in the "Microcomputer" evaluation room, and most of the previous product scores are in the range of 2000 to 3000 points. The reason for the high score is also because the Seagate Coyote Pro 20TB NAS hard drive has shorter execution times and faster transfer speeds when performing various applications.

NAS test platform results
It was then tested with the Seagate Coyote Pro 20TB NAS hard drive and NAS. The NAS used for the test was the QNAP TS-262C, which was configured with an Intel Celeron N4505 dual-core processor, 16GB of DDR4 memory, and a 2.5GbE ethernet port. It features a dual-bay design, so we tested it with two Seagate Coyote Pro 20TB NAS drives to form a RAID1. The router is the ROG GT-AC2900, which mounts the QNAPP TS-262C with two Seagate Coyote Pro 20TB NAS hard drives installed on iSCSI to a laptop computer also connected to the router, which has a SN530 SSD. Both NAS and laptops are connected to routers through Gigabit wired network ports, so the transmission speed between them is mainly limited by the network environment.

Testing the basic performance of the disk partitions mounted on the laptop with CrystalDiskMark, we can see that its continuous read speed of more than 110MB/s is running full of gigabit wired bandwidth.

Looking at its read and write performance in real-world applications, this time we only kept the most common test of transferring a single large-capacity file and a folder containing 1000 photos in NAS applications. When transferring a single video file of 22.1GB, it can be seen that its read and write speed exceeds 110MB/s, and the actual reading speed even exceeds the score measured by CrystalDiskMark, which can give full play to the energy of gigabit bandwidth.

When transferring the photo folder, the continuous reading speed was basically not affected, reaching 115MB/s, and the write speed was not much reduced, at 94.1MB/s. If the user's network environment from the router to the other end of the laptop, PC has a 2.5GbE wired network port, or the wireless connection speed can exceed 2.4Gbps, then the speed of data transmission will be faster, more able to play the original performance of the Seagate Coyote Pro 20TB NAS hard disk.
In addition, I also played 8K@60fps videos stored on the NAS on my laptop, and the whole playback process was smooth and clear, and there was no stuttering at all.
