22TB! Seagate confirms the introduction of a very large capacity mechanical hard drive: stacked tile recording

In a recent official conference call with investors, Seagate confirmed that it will introduce its new 22TB mechanical hard drive to interested customers, which is expected to set a record for the largest single disk capacity of mechanical hard drives on the market.

22TB! Seagate confirms the introduction of a very large capacity mechanical hard drive: stacked tile recording

Previously, Seagate has launched two products with a maximum capacity of 20TB, the new Seagate Galaxy Exos X20 20TB and the Seagate Wolf IronWolf Pro 20TB hard drive, both of which use traditional magnetic recording technology.

The new 22TB product launched this time adopts a tile-stacked record.

Seagate says the product is only available to specific customers, primarily those who need maximum storage density in their data centers, as well as those who can manage the use of stacked tile hard drives.

Because stacked tile drives are very slow to overwrite writes, data centers must write data sequentially and minimize random writes to ensure predictable performance.

It is reported that when Seagate announced the launch of 20TB hard drives in mid-2020, it said it would use the latest 2.2 TB vertical recording platters. However, it is not clear whether the new 22TB product using SMR technology uses similar specifications. According to speculation, its maximum continuous transmission speed should be close to that of the Seagate Galaxy Exos X20 20TB.

In addition, Seagate is still evaluating hard drives for thermally assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology and has not yet said when it will be available on a common platform.
