200,000 hard drives from 4 brands are powered on: the best quality model is the Seagate 6TB from 7 years ago

Our old friend, storage service provider Backblaze, has released the total number of hard drive failure rates for 2021.

In the past year, Backblaze has added 40,460 new drives to the storage pool, bringing the total to 206928. Among them, 3760 blocks are startup disks, 203168 blocks are storage disks, and after removing 409 test disks, the final statistics are 202759 blocks.

The model with the highest annualized failure rate is seagate 14TB (ST14000NM0138), which is 4.79%; the lowest is Seagate 6TB (ST6000DX000). It is worth noting that the service time of these 6TB Seagate disks reached 80.4 months, that is, nearly 7 years, which is also the longest service product.

As for the problem of Seagate's 14TB, it is said to be related to firmware.

In addition, last year's newly added Western Digital 16TB (WUH721816ALE6L0) and Toshiba 16TB (MG08ACA16TE) performed well, with annualized failure rates of only 0.14% and 0.91%, respectively.

After summarizing the four major brands, it was found that the most stable quality in general is Western Digital and HGST, possibly because Seagate hard drives are used the most, and the total failure rate was once close to 3%, but it has slowly improved in recent years.

Note: AFR (Annualized Failure Rate) = (Number of Failed Drives / (Days/ 365)) * 100%.
