Yu Junjian was born in Guilin, Guangxi Province, to a family of scholars, and was deeply influenced by art. Although he loved singing since he was a child, he never thought that this would become his life's work. In 1971, Yu Junjian entered the Guilin Song and Dance Troupe while studying at the Affiliated High School of Guangxi Normal University, and later graduated from the China Conservatory of Music, the postgraduate class of the Department of Art of Peking University, and the first postgraduate class of flowers and birds of the Chinese Painting Research Institute.

In the spring of 2017, Yu Junjian published a memoir of his teenage time in Guilin, Home in Guilin.
