Liu Xingcan, the translator of "The Adventures of Good Soldier Shuaike", died at the age of 84

Liu Xingcan, a famous Czech literary translator, retired cadre of the People's Literature Publishing House, and editor of the foreign literature editing room, died of a heart attack at 16:00 on September 25, 2021 Canadian time, at the age of 84.

Liu Xingcan's translation of the Adventures of a Good Soldier shuai ke from the original text is the first Chinese translation from Czech. His translations also include Love and Fire, Selected Czechoslovak FolkTales, The Tree of World Fairy Tales, History of Czechoslovak Literature, Further Forward, and Baronka. Selected Illustrations of Czech and Slovak Children's Literature won the 1993 Ice Heart Literary Award.

Czech Republic, for Liu Xingcan is of great significance. In 1954, at the age of 17, she went from Wuhan University to study at Charles University in Prague. In this literary capital, she not only successfully completed her studies, but also met her lifelong partner, Bai Chongli, and had the idea of translating Czech literature. Later, before and after her return to China, she translated and published more than forty excellent Czech literary works of more than five million words, including Hašek's "The Adventures of the Good Soldier Shuaik", Hrabar's "I Served the King of England", Nobel Prize winner Sefert's poetry "Violet", and the famous Czech fairy tale writer Joseph Rada's "The Adventures of the Black Cat".
