The Austro-Hungarian Empire under The Good Soldier

author:Seventeen years of Koshin

The Good Soldier Shuaik was written by the Czech writer Hašek from 1920 to 1923, but in fact it was not completed, and Hasek had planned to write it in six volumes, including Shuaik's trip to China to participate in the Northern Expedition. However, Hašek unfortunately died on January 3, 1923, and before his death, "Good Soldier Shuaik" was only written in the third chapter of the fourth volume, so it became the current version.

When it comes to the Czech Republic, it is the literary and artistic youth who thinks of Kafka; it is the senior literary and artistic youth who thinks of Haruki Murakami; it is the fan of Jay Chou who thinks of Prague Square; it is the history students who think of the Sudetenland; it is the German who thinks of "Clay Man Golian"; it is the literary and artistic youth who thinks of Milan Kundera who studies German; it is the gambling enthusiast who thinks of Pilsen's victory; it is the post-80s who thinks of "The Story of the Mole"; and it is the unspeakable who thinks of the "Prague Spring". As a geographical and historical country in Central Europe, the Czech Republic has three distinct representatives in the literary world: Kafka, who is always writing in German and runs through the main line with German philosophy; and Hašek of the Lower Riba.

In the Czech Republic, whether it is the capital Prague or the small town in the countryside, Kafka and Kundera are more present in museums and libraries, and almost everywhere is a portrait of a fat Austro-Hungarian Soldier of World War I, which represents a nationally famous chain of restaurants, derived from the protagonist of this article, the good soldier Shuaike.

The book tells the story of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from the perspective of an ethnic minority under Austro-Hungarian rule. The first chapter of the article is that after the Sarajevo incident, The Handsome talks to several people about the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, which leads to all the stories. In this chapter, it is also mentioned that Queen Elizabeth was assassinated in Switzerland, this Queen Elizabeth, and a very familiar name Chinese, Princess Sissi.

For the events in Sarajevo, see "The Emperors of the Austrian Empire from Princess Sissi"

From the second chapter onwards, Shuaike's military journey is completely in accordance with the historical route of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the events and battles in which Shuaike participated, including the number of troops and the names of officers, are all consistent with the real history, and from this point of view, "Good Soldier Shuaike" is also a historical novel.

The story of the book is full of absurdity, and Hašek's Austro-Hungarian Empire is a chaotic and ignorant country reminiscent of The Adventures of onion Head. Interestingly, the author of The Adventures of the Onion Head is Jani Rodari, born in 1920, and although he was born without the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the city of his birth was located in northern Italy and belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 19th century. Perhaps, the handsome and dashing Franz Joseph I we see in "Princess Sissi" has also become confused and absurd in the old age of his reign. As a Czech, Shuaik was regarded as an idiot by the Prague government because of his salute to the portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I and the chanting "Long live the Emperor", that is, the official view that no normal person would identify with the Emperor of the Habsburg family. The multi-ethnic Austro-Hungarian Empire actually sat on the powder keg, laying the groundwork for future divisions.

Formerly known as Bohemia, the Czech Republic was famous in Europe for its high production of glasswork, and after the Battle of the White Mountains in 1620, it was ruled by Austria for 300 years. In 1918, it broke away from austria-Hungary and forcibly merged with Slovakia, becoming the first defense in Western Europe to block the rise of Germany. Czechoslovakia was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with New China, and from the 1950s to the 1970s, the buses running on the streets of Beijing were Czech Skoda cars. The Prague Spring of 1968 was the second movement against the Soviet model in eastern European history, and China was the first country in the socialist camp to stand up in solidarity with Czechoslovakia, and the following year the "Treasure Island Incident" broke out, and China and the Soviet Union formally turned against each other. Of course, the Czech and Chinese pairs have recently fallen out with each other, which is really regrettable.

Back to Hašek, the elder Ha is a typical Czech, joking and cynical. He was, in fact, an uncompromising egoistic loser, who was an alcoholic, so he lost his first job, got married and joined Animal World magazine, became editor-in-chief, then began to fictionalize animals that did not exist and was fired, then began to be unprofessional, became a dog dealer, and forged purebred certificates for hybrid dogs. He pretended to commit suicide and jumped from the Charles Bridge in Braque into the Vltava River, where he was imprisoned in an insane asylum.

In 1911, the Austro-Hungarian Parliament was elected, and he formed a "party that advocated moderation and progress within the limits of the law", speaking in beer halls, and unlike Hitler in later generations, he was only trying to solicit business for taverns. In 1914, during the First World War, he registered his "nationality" as Russia in a hotel in Prague, which at that time was an enemy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and wrote under the "Purpose" item "Spying on the Military Operations of the Austrian General Staff", the police thought that an important spy had been found, quickly arrested him, interrogated him and said that he wanted to test the efficiency of the Austrian police in the arrest of spies, the police were very angry, and organized him into the 91st Regiment of the Czech Legion and sent him to the Russian front.

In September 1915 Hašek was captured, and subsequently became a semi-official Russian soldier, joining the Czech Corps of the Russian Army. During the October Revolution of 1917, he joined the Red Army, the following year he joined the Bolshevik Party, returned to Prague in 1920 and brought back a Russian wife, who was not divorced in the Czech Republic. He was then abandoned by mainstream society and, with the support of several friends, wrote "Good Soldier Shuaike" in the countryside until his death in 1923.

Such a person wrote his experience into Shuai Ke's body. When we read "Good Soldier Shuaike", we can see the shadow of Hasek himself. Czechoslovakia adapted the work into a film in 1957, and the image of Shuaik in it is actually the character on the cover of the book at the beginning of this article.

Finally, Archduke Ferdinand, who was killed in the Sarajevo incident, has been living in the Czech castle of Knobišj, which is a castle in the forest, which does not look very good on the outside, but is full of specimens of hunting, and Archduke Ferdinand does not like Vienna, and in order to avoid the people he hates, he has been hunting here. I wasn't allowed to take pictures inside when I went, but there were still photos taken online.
