During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the War of Liberation, the Chinese Communist Party produced a number of outstanding workers on the secret front, known as "red agents" or "people walking on the tip of a knife." They lurked inside the enemy, disregarded life and death, and with superhuman wisdom and boldness, skillfully maneuvered with the enemy, obtained a large amount of top-secret information for our Party, and made immortal contributions to the cause of the revolution.
Red Agent Zhao Wei is an outstanding representative of our Party's secret front and is known as one of the "Ten King Kongs" in the history of China's modern secret agents. During the Liberation War, Zhao Wei was assigned by Li Kenong, known as the "King of Red Agents", to break into the top level of the Northeast Security Command of the Kuomintang army, with the top secret code name "902".
It was this "902" that used a false order to turn the tide of the northeast war in one fell swoop and made indelible contributions to the smooth liberation of the northeast.
In 1939, at the age of 20, Zhao Wei was admitted to the Whampoa Military Academy. During his time at the school, Zhao Wei studied hard, achieved excellent results, and performed outstandingly, and was personally received by the principal Chiang Kai-shek, who gave him a Zhongzheng sword engraved with the words "Unsuccessful, He Will Become a Ren".
After graduation, Zhao Wei first served as a second lieutenant officer in the 31st Group Army of the Fifth Theater of operations of the Kuomintang, and then transferred to the staff officer of the Major Staff of the Kuomintang Northeast Security Command. In 1946, Zhao Wei became an underground secret intelligence officer of our party, and Li Kenong, the "king of red agents", personally gave him the code name "902". Except for a few people such as Li Kenong, no one knows his dual identity.
In 1947, the Kuomintang Northeast Security Command formulated the military strategy of "defending the north and attacking the south, first attacking the south and then the north", and gathered more than 120,000 troops from 12 divisions to prepare for the fourth attack on Liaodong and fight a decisive battle with the Northeast Democratic Coalition Army.
At the top of the Kuomintang's Northeast Security Command, Zhao Wei soon learned of the top-secret plan. Zhao Wei provided the intelligence to the underground party intelligence department of the Communist Party of China for the first time.
Shortly after the information was transmitted, Du Yuming, commander-in-chief of the Kuomintang Northeast Security, temporarily changed its deployment and ordered the 13th Army stationed in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia, to be quickly transferred to Shenyang to strengthen its forces. After Zhao Wei learned of the adjusted plan, he was impatient, because once the 13th Army successfully arrived in Shenyang, it would form a siege of the Northeast Democratic Coalition Army in Liaodong, and the war situation would be very unfavorable to the Northeast Democratic United Army.
After some deliberation, the bold and careful Zhao Wei finally thought of a countermeasure, and did not hesitate to risk his life, using his special identity to impersonate the name of the Kuomintang Northeast Security Command, and issued a false order to the Thirteenth Army: order the Thirteenth Army to change the route of the march, rush to Xinbin Sanyuanpu, and occupy the commanding heights of Lanshan Mountain.
The Thirteenth Army did not distinguish between true and false, and indeed made a plan, and very obediently marched all the way in accordance with the military orders of the "headquarters" and came to Xinbin Sanyuanpu, not wanting to hit the encirclement circle of the Northeast Democratic Coalition Army, and tens of thousands of horses were completely annihilated.
This "accident" directly disrupted the plan of Du Yuming,d'état of the Northeast Security Commander-in-Chief, to attack Liaodong for the fourth time; since the fresh forces were completely wiped out, Du Yuming was forced to change the military strategy of "defending the north and attacking the south, first attacking the south and then the north," and changing from an all-out offensive to an all-round defense.
It was precisely because of Zhao Wei's masterpiece that the situation of the entire Northeast Battlefield was directly changed, and since then, the Northeast Democratic Coalition Army has gradually gained the initiative in the entire Northeast Battlefield and began to turn into a full-line attack, laying the foundation for the future Northeast Decisive Battle.
Zhao Wei's contribution was indispensable.
Subsequently, the Northeast Democratic Coalition Army took the opportunity to launch a summer offensive. And Zhao Wei once again played a crucial role.
Before the campaign was launched, Zhao Wei took advantage of his position to continuously and timely transmit information on the deployment of Kuomintang troops, fortifications, and reinforcement movements in Siping, Changchun, and Shenyang to the hands of our underground party intelligence personnel in a timely manner, thus providing an extremely important basis for the Northeast Democratic Coalition Army to correctly formulate effective military arrangements for the enemy situation and achieve final victory.
Throughout the summer campaign, the Northeast Democratic Coalition Army annihilated more than 83,000 Kuomintang troops, liberated 42 towns, and connected the liberated areas of Eastern, Western, Southern, and Northern Manchuria, and all the Kuomintang troops were shrunk to Shenyang, Changchun, and other major cities.
In October 1947, Zhao Wei successfully escaped from the Kuomintang Northeast Security Command, returned to the Liberated Areas, and finally threw himself into the arms of our party. After returning to the Liberated Areas, Zhao Wei continued to devote himself to the revolutionary cause in a new capacity until the founding of New China.
Because Zhao Wei was a high-ranking agent who had infiltrated the top echelons of the Kuomintang, his identity has not been made public. After many years, Zhao Wei's identity was finally declassified, and his special experience and great contributions were well known. Only then did it become known the true identity of the top secret agent lurking at the top of the Kuomintang, code-named "902."
