During the Qin and Han dynasties, the Yisan people usually said "parents, brothers and wives", and it was also said that "fathers, mothers, and wives" were the three ethnic groups. Later emperors gradually expanded this scope to the Five Tribes, the Seven Tribes, and the Nine Tribes up to the Sui Dynasty. The first person in history to be cursed by the Nine Tribes was Yang Xuangan of the Sui Dynasty.

Yang Xuangan was born into a family of eunuchs, and his father, Yang Su, was a Sui Dynasty situ who attacked the Chen Dynasty, helped the Sui Emperor seize the throne, and quelled the rebellion of Yang Yu, the King of Han. Yang Xuan felt that when he was young, he was not a very good instrument, and everyone in the world thought that he was demented, but his father did not see it that way. Sure enough, when he grew up, Yang Xuan felt a majestic physique and a beautiful beard. For the merits of his father, he was awarded the title of Pillar Of the State and was awarded the title of Erpin Official. Both father and son became prominent figures of the dynasty.
After Yang Su's death, Yang Xuan felt that he had attacked the Duke of Chu and was promoted to the position of Shangshu of the Ministry of Rites, and his family was often full of high friends. With the increase of Yang Xuangan's power, the Suspicion of the Sui Emperor became more and more serious, and Yang Xuangan also planned to kill the Sui Emperor and push Yang Hao, the King of Qin, as emperor. In the ninth year of Daye, the Sui Emperor's second eastern expedition to Goryeo, the peasant war at the end of the Sui Dynasty had also broken out, so Yang Xuangan took advantage of the situation to rebel.

However, Yang Xuangan obviously underestimated the strength of the Sui Emperor, who was forced to return from Goryeo and quickly suppressed Yang Xuangan's rebellion. Yang Xuangan did not want to fall into the hands of the Sui Emperor, so he asked his brother to kill him. The Sui Emperor hated Yang Xuan to the bone, and not only divided his body, but also violently destroyed him for three days. He also cut his flesh into pieces and put them in the fire to burn. At the same time, the Sui Emperor cursed Yang Xuangan of the Nine Tribes and changed his Yang surname to the surname of "O".
The second person in history to be cursed by the Nine Tribes was Fang Xiaoru, a minister in the early Ming Dynasty. Strictly speaking, Fang Xiaoru was not condemned to the Nine Tribes, but the Ten Tribes. After the success of the Battle of Jingnan by Zhu Di, the King of Yan, he successfully entered the city of Nanjing. At that time, the civil and military officials saw the wind and made the rudder, and surrendered to Zhu Di one after another, but Fang Xiaoru refused. Fang Xiaoru was the head of the literati at that time, and as long as he recognized the legitimacy of Zhu Di's succession, the tianxia literati would follow suit.

Zhu Di threatened, "You are not afraid that I will curse you Nine Tribes?" Fang Xiaoru said, "Even if you curse my Ten Clans, you are not afraid!" Zhu Di was enraged by Fang Xiaoru, and really ordered someone to curse Fang Xiaoru's Ten Clans, in addition to the Nine Clans, he also counted his "protégés" into it. In the end, a total of 873 people were killed.
