Debut 176-layer QLC Flash Micron introduces 2400 series SSDs: lifespan is half as short as TLC

Following the first mass production of 176-layer stack of TLC flash memory, Micron recently launched the first 176-layer QLC flash memory, its launch of the 2400 series SSD hard disk uses a new generation of flash memory and PCIe 4.0, but the speed of up to 4500MB/s, 2TB capacity TBW life of 600TB, only half of the TLC flash memory.

Although Micron 2400 series SSDs are on PCIe 4.0, QLC flash memory is not known for performance, mainly for cost-effective client applications, including desktops and notebooks, with capacities of 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, and the specifications support M.2 2230/2242/2280, of which the 30mm version still has a maximum capacity of 2TB, which is its advantage.

In terms of performance, the 2400 series hard drives read 4500MB/s, write 4000MB/s, randomly read 650K IOPS, and randomly write 700K IOPS.

In terms of life, the 2400 series 512GB version is 150TBW, the 1TB version is 300TBW, the 2TB version is 600TBW, this write life is not bad in QLC, but compared with the existing TLC flash memory, the 2TB version of 600TBW is only half of the life, and the 2TB of the domestic state-oriented TiPro 7000 has a 1200TBW life, which is 128 layers of TLC flash memory.

However, Micron's 176-layer QLC flash memory is still an improvement over the previous generation of 96-layer QLC flash memory, with IO throughput increased by 33%, latency reduced by 24%, and standby power consumption reduced by 50%.

Overall, the performance and life of SSD hard disks manufactured by 176-layer QLC flash memory are obviously different from those of the top PCIe 4.0 hard disks, but they are better than low power consumption, large capacity, small size, and cost advantages, suitable for notebook computers and low-end desktop SSDs.
