Last year, a total of 8.73 million domestic cars were recalled, and Mercedes-Benz ranked first

In the context of increasingly stringent vehicle exhaust emission regulations and the increasing level of intelligent equipment in automobiles, the frequency of automobile failures is also more frequent.

According to the car recall information of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, a total of 144 car recalls were implemented in China in 2021, and the total number of recalls reached 8.73 million. Compared with 2020, the number of car recalls in China decreased by about 30% last year, but the total number of recalled vehicles increased by more than 30%, and the software problems increased significantly.

According to the recall announcement, Mercedes-Benz (including imported Mercedes-Benz and Beijing Mercedes-Benz) recalled more than 2.78 million vehicles last year, accounting for 31.8% of the total recalls. In December last year, Mercedes-Benz launched four recalls involving internal and external parts such as engine software, sunroofs, drive shafts, and seats. Notably, Mercedes-Benz recently announced its global sales in 2021, delivering more than 2.4 million new vehicles in 2021, a record high. Among them, in the Chinese market, Mercedes-Benz has sold more than 750,000 vehicles, and the Chinese market is still the largest single market for Mercedes-Benz in the world, accounting for 35.5% of sales. However, the number of products recalled in China in 2021 exceeded the sales of new cars in the whole year.

SAIC-GM-Wuling ranked second, recalling more than 1.45 million vehicles due to the insufficient wear resistance of the forced ventilation valve spool of the engine crankcase, which may cause engine damage in extreme cases and the risk of unreasonable emissions.

Toyota Motor, known for its "good quality and low fuel consumption," ranked third in the recall ranking last year. In 2021, Toyota will recall more than 1.28 million vehicles in China, mainly including RAV4 Rongfang, Asia Dragon, Camry and Lexus series models. Its largest recall occurred in December last year, because the internal components of the engine exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR valve) may be corroded by higher concentrations of chlorine in the fuel, resulting in the valve body movement problem, Toyota China, FAW Toyota, GAC Toyota, Sichuan FAW Toyota and others launched a total of more than 898,000 vehicle recalls.

Tesla, which has set a record delivery record, launched six recalls in China last year, with a total recall of more than 543,000 vehicles, ranking fourth. Among them, due to common problems such as insufficient strength of the front and rear steering knuckles and the locking of the front trunk, Tesla has launched many recall activities in China and the United States. In recent years, Volkswagen (including Lamborghini and Bentley), which has been criticized by users due to problems such as collision gates and GPF particle trap blockages, will recall a total of 244,000 vehicles in China in 2021.

Among the new car companies, Xiaopeng Automobile also launched a recall in 2021. In January 2021, Xiaopeng Automobile recalled 13,399 G3s due to the tinned terminal connected to the copper row screw on the dc bus capacitor of the inverter, which may cause a short circuit between the positive and negative poles of the high-voltage DC power due to the tin whiskers, and the vehicle may not be able to start again when it is parked, and the vehicle is in a driving state may cause the vehicle to lose power.

In addition, Korean brands that have been slow to improve sales in China are also on the list of recalls in 2021. Hyundai and Kia ranked 5th and 13th on the list with 519,000 and 92,000 recalls, respectively. At the beginning of last year, Beijing Hyundai recalled more than 450,000 cars due to the problem of hydraulic electronic control units, and the hidden dangers of this failure include the short circuit phenomenon of hydraulic electronic control units, which may cause engine compartment fires in severe cases. In the past few years, although Hyundai Kia has applied advanced technologies such as CVVD and E-GMP platforms, quality issues have also had a negative impact on the revival of Korean brands.
