Xu Guangda, originally known as Xu Deguang, was born in 1908 to an ordinary family in Dongxiang, Changsha County, Hunan Province. Although the family was poor, Xu Guangda's parents did not let him give up his studies, and Xu Guangda did not give up his studies and was admitted to Changsha Normal School with excellent results.
