Xu Guangda was born in a poor peasant family in 1908 and began to herd cattle for other people's families at the age of 7 to subsidize their families. But Xu Guangda liked to read very much, and while herding cattle, he secretly listened to the teacher's lectures outside the school window. The teacher of the village school was named Zou Xilu, who had also been a man in the late Qing Dynasty, and he also noticed this cowherd who secretly listened to the lesson. One winter, when it was snowing heavily, Xu Guangda listened to the lecture outside the window and listened to God, but he was thinly dressed and did not eat, and the cold wind blew all morning, blowing him unconscious and falling into the snow.

In 1921, he received an invitation from his friend Xu Teli to teach at the Changsha Normal School he founded, and Zou Xilu agreed, and also took Xu Guangda to Changsha to study. Xu Guangda met the world in the provincial capital, actively participated in the student movement, and was deeply influenced by revolutionary ideas. In 1925, Xu Guangda joined the Communist Party of China, and the following year, he was introduced by the organization and studied at the fifth phase of the Whampoa Military Academy. In desperation, Xu Guangda returned to his hometown. As soon as his parents saw their son return, they asked him to hurry up and get married.
In a hurry, the family held this arranged marriage for Xu Guangda and Zou Jinghua. Xu Guangda studied with Zou Xilu and met this sister several times, but never thought he would marry her. When he was transferred to Shanghai for treatment, he almost died on the operating table because of the pursuit and killing of Kuomintang agents. It was not until May 1932 that he came to the Soviet Union for medical treatment, and later studied in Moscow, until after the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, when he returned to Yan'an.
Xu Guangda on this side threw himself into the revolution, but Zou Jinghua in his hometown had a very hard life. Zou Jinghua's father lost his post, and Zou Jinghua's brother-in-law was assassinated. Relatives and friends have poured their anger on Zou Jinghua, and she has also been asked to divorce her, saying that as long as she signs the divorce agreement, she will be freed. Zou Jinghua resolutely refused to comply and tore the divorce agreement to pieces. The Changsha Police Command also spread false information that a group of "communist bandits" had been executed, including Xu Guangda. Zou Jinghua, who saw the news, was devastated and wanted to commit suicide, but fortunately he was saved by his father in time.
When Xu Guangda was recuperating, he once wrote a letter to his family under a pseudonym. Zou Jinghua recognized her husband's handwriting, was ecstatic, and quickly wrote a reply. Xu Guangda learned that his wife had a very hard time, sent 200 silver dollars to his family, and also told Zou Jinghua that he must read more books and study and understand progressive ideas. However, this time, Xu Guangda did not wait for the reply, he was sent to the Soviet Union for medical treatment, and broke off contact with his family. After Xu Guangda came to Yan'an, many young women had a good feeling for him and entrusted others to match. In the face of endless blind dates and overtures, Xu Guangda politely declined.
