The number of crimes in New York City surged in 2021 with nearly 500 murders

Data from the New York City Police Department at the end of 2021 shows that as the new crown epidemic continues, the number of crimes in New York will continue to surge in 2021, and the number of murders and shootings will far exceed the level before the outbreak.

According to the New York Daily News reported on January 1, the data shows that as of December 31, local time, the New York City Police Department investigated a total of 485 murders last year (2021), an increase of 17 cases from 468 reported in 2020, a growth rate of 3%; and in 2019 before the outbreak, the city reported 318 murders, and the number in 2021 surged by 52% compared with 2019.

In addition to murders, the number of shootings in New York City also increased in 2021. According to police statistics, there were 1,562 shootings in new York's five boroughs last year, 30 more than in 2020. As of December 26, local time, there were 503 shootings in the worst-case Bronx district, 120 more than in 2020, accounting for 32% of the total number of shootings in New York City; the number of homicides in the district also increased from 108 to 146, an increase of 35%; and a total of 224 shootings in the Upper Manhattan area, 48 more than in 2020.

New York City police also found that the number of sexual assaults, robberies, assaults and car thefts in the city increased throughout 2021.
