As of Dec. 25, the NYPD has recorded 479 murders, largely due to a staggering surge in gun violence in the city, the data shows.
New York has not had more than 500 murders in a single year since 2011. The number of murders in New York reached 515 in 2011. In 2012, the number of murders dropped to 419. In the following years, the number of murders per year was about 300, compared to 292 in 2017.
In 2020, the number of murders in major U.S. cities surged due to the devastating effects of the pandemic. This trend continues into 2021, with the number of murders in New York City surging at the end of the year.
The number of reported murders has nearly doubled in the past month compared to the same period last year, according to the NYPD — 41 homicides occurred between Nov. 28 and Dec. 26 this year, compared with 24 in the same period last year.
Other major U.S. cities are also working to reverse this vexing trend. According to the Chicago Tribune, the number of murders in Chicago in a year is close to 800 at the end of the year. According to ABC, philadelphia is expected to have more than 550 murders this year, the highest since 1960.
