"Don't look for Hungarian women": a mass murder that gave birth to Europe's famous widow's village

author:Judgment

If you travel to Europe and talk about how european girls are good-looking and politely show affection for them, perhaps well-meaning locals will remind you: European girls can be found, but don't look for Hungary. Why is there such "geographical discrimination"? It all started with an appalling incident that took place in the 1920s.

"Don't look for Hungarian women": a mass murder that gave birth to Europe's famous widow's village

About 60 kilometers southeast of Budapest, the capital of Hungary, there is a small village called Nagilev. The village is located along the Danube River, with a warm climate and fertile land, which is very livable. The entire area where Nagilev is located is also an "agricultural demonstration base" hand-picked by the Hungarian government, with a lot of policy support. However, most of the villages in the surrounding towns are rich, except for Naguilev, who looks a little dilapidated, and the atmosphere is indescribably strange. In fact, about a century ago, a series of terrible things happened here, which also made it infamous and prohibitive for a time.

It all started in 1911, when a woman named Julia Fazecas came to town. Julia claimed to be the wife of a doctor, her husband traveled to the doctor, and she herself temporarily settled here. As was the chaotic situation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which was weakening, the inhabitants of the village of Naghilev were conservative and not very friendly to outsiders. However, Julia, who was proficient in obstetrics and gynecology, often helped the women of the village to see doctors, and she did not seem to be trying to get rich, and she would collect some money when she met patients with better families; if the patient's family was poor, she was willing to waive medical fees.

In this way, Julia quickly gained a foothold in the local area, her status in the eyes of the villagers continued to rise, and even when she illegally performed abortions on young girls, the judges would choose to be partial, just to do some symbolic punishment that was not painful or itchy. As a nepotism, Julia's cousin also took a job in the village that resembled a sheriff. Perhaps in the eyes of the naguilev villagers, Julia was a goddess given to them by God, but to everyone's surprise, this Julia was actually a female devil masked with hypocrisy.

In fact, the situation in the village of Naghilev is much worse than we thought. Although it is not far from the big city of Budapest, it is surprisingly isolated. The child was ordered by the parents to be doll kissed early in the morning, and life was arranged clearly from the beginning. Hungarian men with Slavic blood are grumpy, often drinking and pastime, and when they get drunk, they come home and argue with their wives over trivial matters. What's more, under the influence of Catholic culture, divorce is even characterized locally as a morally corrupt crime. Therefore, no matter how miserable life is, the villagers can only endure it forcibly, but this desperate state is washed away by an "accident".

On July 28, 1914, World War I broke out, and austria-Hungary, one of the backbone of the Allied camp, fell into a state of exhaustion and had to devote all available manpower to the war, and the vast majority of men in Naghilev village were conscripted into the army. Not only that, but the women were not idle, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire set up a prisoner-of-war camp near the village, and let the women in the village take on some of the work of caring for the captives.

It is said that the imprisonment of prisoners of war must have the appearance of imprisonment, and who would have expected the Austro-Hungarian Empire to show the demeanor of its own great power and engage in some kind of "gentleman's war", not only did not put the prisoners of the Allied army in the cells, but allowed them to walk out of the prisoner of war camps and wander around the nearby areas. At this point, the women of Naghilev Village are like a long drought, almost all women of the right age have joined the army of fun-seeking, good-looking women have also had an affair with many prisoners of war at the same time, and even some women who love vanity have more lovers with each other. Although it was a happy time, when the first world war was over and the men returned to the village, the situation immediately got out of control.

Unhappiness in life can be endured, but wearing a green hat cannot be tolerated. The husband and wife quarreled even more fiercely, and even moved their hands. Women who were just enjoying a good life were no longer willing to go along with it, and they often poured out their grievances to Julia. Unexpectedly, Julia said that she had a "panacea" that could quietly kill people. Although the process will be longer, it can help women end their painful lives.

In fact, Julia's so-called "panacea" is a highly toxic arsenic. She mixed a small amount of poison into bread, wine and other foods and sold it to women who had lost patience with life. Adhering to her previous entrepreneurial spirit of "childlike innocence", julia would even give them the poison white when she met women who could not come up with money. The amount of arsenic in a single food or two foods is by no means fatal, but the toxin continues to accumulate in the body, and the person is soon killed. Gradually, some people found that the death rate in the village was a little frighteningly high, and people died every three to five minutes. Even so, no one ever doubted Julia, who blamed it on the aftermath of the war.

Julia made a fortune from this method, and she continued her business until the late 1920s. By 1930, Nagilev had become a famous "widow's village" in the eight townships. At first, there were still men who came here to court, but when it was found that the men who came here would soon die mysteriously, people immediately hid away like ghosts. The situation in the village of Naghilev, which has lost its labor force, has also plummeted, and the farmland is in disrepair, as if it were the end of the world.

Up to this point, no one had seen Julia's husband, who was a doctor, but no one cared about it anymore. She controlled the village firmly by relying on her own business empire for her own wealth and death, and she still held a supreme position in the minds of the villagers. Afterwards, when the Hungarian police studied the past, it was suggested that Julia was not the first time she had done such a thing. Without warning, she degenerated from "angel" to "demon", fearing that she would deceive people's trust by superficially benevolent means early on, and then rely on trust for money. In other words, it is frightening to think that Naguilev may not have been the first victims to be sucked dry by Julia.

Interestingly, Julia's ugly face was also exposed by an accident.

Later, the Danube caused a not-so-large flood that just happened to wash away a cemetery along the river, and the bones of it were exposed. Coincidentally, the body was found by a medical student who happened to pass by. After seeing the abnormalities on the bones, the medical students concluded that the deceased was poisoned and died. He felt that things were not simple and reported the situation to the local police. The Hungarian police came to a large-scale coffin autopsy in the name of repairing the tomb, and were surprised to find that many of the skeletons had signs of poisoning. They went deeper into the investigation. Many village women could not resist the police's cross-examination, and in order to obtain a light sentence, they poked out the purchase of drugs from Julia's hands. On the other hand, the cunning Julia realized that the matter was about to be revealed, and not only destroyed her own inventory, but also knocked on the door at night, warning customers to dispose of the drugs that they had not had time to use. Unexpectedly, the Hungarian police had already secretly arranged eyeliner and came to a "stolen and captured".

At this point, an organized mass murder case against men spanning more than a decade has finally been solved, and the mystery of Naguilev's "widow's village" has been solved. This became a joke throughout Europe, and the saying "don't marry a Hungarian woman" came from this. Newspapers echoed the anger of the population and deliberately exaggerated the number of victims. According to Hungarian media, at least 300 male villagers were poisoned and 26 escaped. It is widely believed that about 100 villagers were victimized. Historians have verified through household registration and other sources that this number should be between 30 and 50. At that time, the women of Naghilev village were obviously a bit excessive: among the victims of the poisoning, there were actually several children.

In addition, until Julia Fazecas was arrested and imprisoned, the police could not find her so-called "husband" Julius Fazekas, so some speculated that Julius may have died at her hands and was wronged by the identity of a borrower.
