Chen Changhao, born in Wuhan in 1906, was admitted to Wuchang Zhonghua University in 1926. Chen Changhao was quickly appreciated by the party for his tall, burly, down-to-earth work and his positive performance in the Communist Youth League, and chen Changhao was later sent to the Soviet Union for further study. In 1931, Chen Changhao was appointed General Political Commissar of the Red Fourth Front. After this, he actively followed everyone around the battle, and also led the members of the organization to create a revolutionary base area, expanding the Red Fourth Front to 100,000 people.

In 1936, Chen Changhao and Xu Xiangqian were ordered to lead the Western Route Army to the west, and along the way, due to the huge disparity between the enemy and ourselves and the lack of materials, they were defeated in subsequent battles, and the troops of more than 20,000 people were beaten to only 3,000 people. Finally, Chen Changhao and Xu Xiangqian decided to retreat the remaining troops in three ways. During the retreat, Chen Changhao had to stay at home in a hometown to recuperate due to a stomach attack.

In September 1937, Chen Changhao finally found the large army and returned to Yan'an. After returning, Chen Changhao found that the responsibility for the collapse of the Western Route Army was all placed on Zhang Guotao, Xu Xiangqian, and himself. Although Chen Changhao was full of grievances, he still remained in northern Shaanxi. In 1939, Chen Chang suffered another episode of stomach disease and applied to his superiors to go to the Soviet Union for treatment. After Chen Changhao went to the Soviet Union for medical treatment, the Soviet-German war broke out, and Chen Changhao repeatedly requested to return to China to participate in the war, but was not approved. In desperation, Chen Changhao could only stay in the Soviet Union and work as an interpreter, and it was not until 1951 that Chen Changhao was able to return to China.
