In late March 1942, during the ambush battle in the base area behind the enemy's rear in Jiaodong, because a company that was ordered to lure the enemy and cut off the Retreat route of the Japanese army failed to achieve its combat intention, the enemy was not lured instead and was attacked by the Japanese army, and finally fell into a bitter battle, and the entire army was destroyed, causing extremely painful losses.
On March 30, 1943, the 13th Regiment of the 5th Brigade of the Jiaodong Military Region received reliable information that about 600 people from a japanese brigade that was sweeping through Qixiaguan were exhausted after being harassed and attacked by our army and had to prepare to withdraw to the stronghold along the pengshui Highway north. The 13th Regiment was determined to seize the fighter and ambush the enemy on the way back, trying to eat or severely damage the Japanese army.
The forces of the 13th Regiment and the Northern Naval Division were immediately mobilized, ready to intercept the retreating Japanese on the road. A temporary command was formed and the command post was set up on a hillside near the ambush circle.
On the afternoon of March 30, the participating units of our army mobilized for battle and issued a mission. More than 2,000 people from our 13th Regiment and the Beihai Independent Regiment formed ambush circles around Tukou and Chuanzhigou to Wanghailing at Huangcheng Yang Pass. The 8th Company of the 3rd Battalion of the 13th Regiment was responsible for waiting for the opportunity to lure the enemy to the main ambush circle and cut off the retreat of the Japanese rearguards, and the company was ambushed on a hill on the east side of the Pengshui Highway.
At about 16:00 on the 30th, the Japanese marching column appeared on the main road, and as the Japanese advanced, the 8th Company saw that about half of the enemy had passed north of the rat tail hill where it had ambushed, so it immediately opened fire, intending to lure the Japanese into our ambush circle. However, the Japanese commander was more calm, and did not immediately command the troops to launch a pursuit, but first carefully observed the surrounding terrain. He found in the telescope that there were a large number of ambush troops of our army on the nearby hilltops, and knowing that this was our army's strategy to lure the enemy, he immediately commanded the troops to attack the flank of the 9th Company and encircled the rat tail hill.
The Japanese then pounced on the hill where the 8 Company was ambushed in two ways, and fired heavily at the hill with light and heavy machine guns, grenadiers and mortars, cutting off the road where the 8 Company had moved. The 8th Company suffered heavy casualties under the fierce enemy fire, and could not withdraw from the position, but could only hold the position.
The Japanese then launched an attack on the hill, in the fierce battle between the two sides, a Japanese machine gun group set up a machine gun on the mass grave on the east side of the Rat's Tail Mountain, firing fiercely at the top of the hill, posing a serious threat to the 8th Company, a squad leader of the 8th Company went to grab the machine gun with several fighters, but under the fierce fire of the enemy, several fighters died one after another, and the squad leader killed the enemy's main and secondary shooters and snatched the machine gun over, but a Japanese officer cut off one arm with a saber, and the machine gun also fell down the hill and broke. The commanders and fighters of the 8th Company, exhausted from ammunition, launched a white-knife counterattack and pushed the charging Japanese down the hill.
However, due to the delay in the arrival of our main force, the Japanese army launched the second charge to the position of the 8th Company, and the commanders and fighters of the 8th Company and the Japanese army launched a final death battle, and all of them died heroically in the battle. Only at this time did the main force of our army come to reinforcements, but the Japanese army had safely withdrawn to the north, and our army pounced.
