At that time, after the three main forces of the Red Army met the division, in order to expand the base area and obtain more materials, the Western Route Army was formed to cross the Yellow River and march west. Unfortunately, due to the disparity in strength, the Western Route Army was finally defeated in the predicament of exhaustion.
The whole army of more than 21,800 people, most of whom spilled blood on the plateau, only less than 3,000 people successfully returned to Yan'an. After the failure of the Western Route Army's western expedition, the fate of many people has been changed, and Chen Changhao, who we want to talk about today, is one of them.
During the Red Army period, Chen Changhao can be regarded as a well-known and famous figure, he studied at Sun Yat-sen University in Moscow in his early years, and was promoted quickly after returning to China, and at the age of 25, he became the general political commissar of the Red Fourth Front, which was equivalent to the position of the commander-in-chief Xu Xiangqian. Later, everyone knew that the Red Fourth Front army developed rapidly, and after the Long March, it was still well-equipped and strong, and Chen Changhao, as the political commissar, naturally made indispensable contributions, was highly respected by everyone, and had a high prestige. If there is no accident, the young Chen Changhao will have a bright future, and his achievements will be unlimited.
However, the failure of the Western Route Army's western expedition caused a huge turn in Chen Changhao's life. At that time, he served as the political commissar of the Western Route Army and the chairman of the Military and Political Committee, and led more than 20,000 horses to fight in the Hexi Corridor, and later the troops were almost completely destroyed. As the main person in charge of the unit, Chen Changhao could not escape the blame, and he was never reused and never participated in military command again. So where did Chen Changhao go after that? After the failure of the Western Expedition, Chen Changhao did not return directly to Yan'an like Xu Shuai, he first came to his hometown in Hubei and wanted to re-pull up a team. But the reality was cruel, and the hope of re-raising the righteous banner was shattered, so Chen Changhao found his wife and children and saw them for the last time. However, Chen Changhao rushed to Yan'an, thinking of doing something for the revolution. After coming to Yan'an, everyone continued to arrange Chen Changhao's work regardless of their previous suspicions. But not long after, Chen Changhao developed a serious stomach problem, and the organization approved him to go to the Soviet Union for treatment.
Chen Changhao did not expect that he had been gone for more than ten years, during which there was almost no news of him in China, and this influential figure of the Red Army period had quietly withdrawn from the stage of history. Chen Changhao also experienced several twists and turns in the Soviet Union, and at the beginning his life and medical conditions were good, but after the outbreak of the Soviet-German war, Chen Changhao often did not have enough to eat, and there was no medicine. During this time, he wrote several letters wanting to return to China to fight, but it was not approved until 1951.
After returning to China, Chen Changhao missed the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the War of Liberation, and naturally failed to award the title of general. His comrades-in-arms and subordinates are now all republican generals, while Chen Changhao is only a deputy director of the Compilation Bureau, and in comparison, he seems to be depressed. Not only that, but later the old accounts of the "West Road Army" were turned over again, and Chen Changhao actively took responsibility and sincerely apologized, but he still could not escape the cruel fate. On July 30, 1967, Chen Changhao swallowed a large amount of sleeping pills at home and left the world that made him despair, at the age of 61.
