Zheng Shiwen, born in 1933 in Zizhong County, Sichuan, had two older brothers who participated in the Korean battlefield before him, so when Zheng Shiwen graduated from southwest military and political university in 1951, his superior leaders took into account his family situation and deliberately let him stay in the military affairs section as a combat service worker. The superior leader said that Zheng Shiwen's mother sent her three sons to the Korean battlefield, this great spirit is worthy of praise, and at least one person must be guaranteed to survive to provide for the mother of the volunteer army.
In this way, Zheng Shiwen was stationed in Daqingshan with his troops under the care of the organization. At that time, Our volunteer army and the enemy army were always in a stalemate on the 38th line, and the long-term combat mission made the volunteer soldiers physically and mentally exhausted, and because of the terrain of the Daqing Mountain, the volunteer army's domestic water was also very scarce, which became an important problem affecting the survival of the volunteer army. On the battlefield, the volunteer army not only had to face the enemy's high-fire weapon suppression, but also faced the test of water shortage in life. Because of the lack of water, the volunteers dried throat biscuits, food in the mouth because of the dry throat can not be swallowed, as little as possible to keep the body hydrated. Zheng Shiwen, a veteran soldier, recalled that a bottle of water today could save the life of a company of soldiers in that era. It is conceivable that the volunteer army at that time lacked water sources to a certain extent.
After careful reconnaissance, the volunteers found that there was a water source under the mountain, but because it was in the war zone, the enemy army was also taking water here, and every time the water was taken, there was inevitably a war. Later, the volunteer soldiers privately studied that our army is a benevolent division, should be tolerant and generous, allow the US army to fetch water at a fixed time every day, and promise not to open fire during this period to avoid casualties on both sides due to unnecessary battles. Therefore, the small soldiers of the volunteer army took the kraft paper and marked it from seven to nine o'clock as "US", and drew our submachine guns and crossed next to it, with the intention of telling the other side to allow each other to take water during this time period, which made the enemy and us get a tacit understanding, the US military was very grateful and highly praised the practice of the volunteer army, and even greeted each other and even gave souvenirs when fetching water.
At first, Zheng Shiwen did not know the tacit understanding between our volunteer army and the enemy sides in the matter of fetching water, and one day the squad leader led Zheng Shiwen and several soldiers to fetch water, and Zheng Shiwen deliberately put on his submachine gun and prepared to fight at any time because of his caution about the battle situation, so as to ensure that his comrades in arms used water. When he was full of nervousness and his comrades marched to the water source, seeing several American troops swinging to fetch water, Zheng Shiwen immediately prepared to shoot, and the squad leader hurried to stop him and told him about the tacit understanding between us and the American army on the matter of fetching water. Although Zheng Shiwen did not understand, but when we went to fetch water, the US military did not shoot, zheng Shiwen seemed to understand that in this war, this is one of the few good intentions that come from the depths of human nature.
From this, we can also know how scarce water was on the battlefield at that time, and the story of "an apple" that we all know is the true story of what happened on the Korean battlefield, which was extremely water-scarce at that time, and the author of the story was Zheng Shiwen. Because he saw his comrades' thirst for water every day, Zheng Shiwen thought of his sacrificial comrade Liu Mingsheng transporting apples for the front line. Liu Mingsheng, as a soldier of the Police Company, was responsible for transporting water to the front line, but due to the artillery fire, the kettle was all broken, and a mud-stained apple was found in the process of creeping forward. Thinking of his comrades in the trenches, Liu Mingsheng wiped the apple sent to his mouth to the front line, and the eight comrades in the tunnel gave way to each other twice before eating the apple.
Not only for our comrades-in-arms and for enemy prisoners of war, our volunteer army is also full of selfless and fearless humanitarian spirit. Zheng Shiwen recalled that at that time, they escorted american prisoners of war to the military headquarters, and the chief saved his rations for the prisoners of war, and the prisoners of war actually hated the food and kicked away. When he saw that the grain bags of the volunteer soldiers were all weeds, he suddenly lost his voice and saluted the volunteer soldiers. In this battle, our volunteer soldiers won the respect of the enemy with their sincerity and fearless spirit of suffering, which is also an important reason for our victory in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
