Beijing, 27 Mar (Xinhua) -- Special Article: The chaos of biological experiments in the United States has caused a global scourge

Recently, the biological experiment activities of the United States in Ukraine have aroused great concern in the international community, but the United States has been hiding it and has not been able to provide a convincing explanation for this. This can't help but remind people that from the use of black people for human experiments on syphilis, to the US military laboratory to "mistakenly send" activated anthrax samples to many countries, the United States in biological experiments and even biological military activities are chaotic, bringing disasters to the world.

Tip of the iceberg

High-risk pathogens that may be carried by migratory birds in Ukraine, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, African swine fever... This is an "active research project" explicitly listed on the website of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Nuran admitted at a Senate hearing in the U.S. Congress on March 8 that Ukraine has "biological research facilities" and that the United States is cooperating with Ukraine to prevent relevant "research materials" from falling into the hands of the Russian military.

On March 10, Kirillov, commander of the Russian radiation, chemical and biological protection forces, said that the Russian Defense Ministry had obtained information about how the United States was studying how to spread extremely dangerous viruses through migratory birds at the Ukrainian biological laboratory. On March 24, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Konashenkov said that Russian experts had found new evidence of direct involvement of the U.S. Department of Defense in the development of biological weapons components in Ukraine, and documents confirmed that the Pentagon approved the "UP-2" project, which mainly aims at molecular analysis of high-risk pathogens endemic to Ukraine.

This is highly concerned by the international community. Alastair Hay, professor emeritus of environmental toxicology at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, said the U.S. had been supporting various laboratories in Ukraine through a post-Cold War program and that "it is unclear why the U.S. needs to support this work and why it is not being conducted under the guidance of the World Health Organization."

Rwandan diplomacy and security expert Emery Nzira battiña said that this is a secret biological experiment conducted by the United States, and the motivation behind it and the risks associated with the leakage of high-risk pathogens are serious concerns of the international community. Turkish medical biology and genetics expert Korkut Ulujan said the United States should make its biological laboratory in Ukraine public and under surveillance, "if there is a leak and the secret research is out of control, the results could be catastrophic."

The U.S. biological experiments in Ukraine are just the tip of the iceberg. Mohammed Omari, an expert on Syrian politics, pointed out that the data shows that the United States funds and manages more than 300 biological laboratories in more than 30 countries around the world.

Dark history

Tracing back to the source, the chaos of biological experiments in the United States has a long "dark history".

In the 20th century, one of the major scandals of biological experimentation in the United States was the "Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment", which used black people to do human experiments: the U.S. Department of Public Health, in cooperation with Tuskegee College in Alabama since 1932, secretly studied the harm of syphilis to the human body with hundreds of black people as experimental subjects. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. government covered up the truth about the experiment for 40 years, until 1972, when there was the first news report on the matter, and the experiment was terminated that year because it was exposed.

The U.S. Military Fort Detrick Base is the base camp for U.S. biomilitary activities. The U.S. Army Institute of Infectious Diseases Medical Research in this base has the most prominent problems, and there are many doubts related to the new crown virus. Inheriting the devil's legacy of the "Unit 731" of the Japanese invasion of China, the Army's Institute of Infectious Diseases Medical Research has the only P4 laboratory in the U.S. military, which stores almost all known highly pathogenic pathogens, including Ebola virus, Bacillus anthracis, smallpox virus, Plague bacillus and SARS coronavirus.

The United States is the world's number one scientific and technological and military power, but it cannot manage the bacillus anthracis in its own military laboratory. Between 2004 and 2015, the military laboratory at the Dagway test site in Utah sent out 86 sets of bacillus anthracis samples, which should have been completely inactivated, but the laboratory that received the samples was shocked that the bacillus anthracis was still active. Later, the investigation and analysis of 33 groups of samples that were still in stock found that 17 of them were still active. When the "anthrax oolong" incident came to light in 2015, samples of bacillus anthracis that might have been activated were received in all 50 states across the United States.

The impact of this event also spilled over from the United States to many parts of the world. According to the survey, the relevant Bacillus anthracis samples were distributed to 9 other countries, including South Korea, Japan and the United Kingdom.

The Curse of America

The "Jupiter" biochemical experiment program of the US military in South Korea was exposed due to the "anthrax oolong" incident, which triggered anger and protests among the South Korean people. On March 21 this year, the Poll Promotion Committee of residents of Busan City, South Korea, held a rally with a number of civil society groups, including the Korean Peace Citizens Network, to demand that the U.S. military in South Korea completely close and withdraw the biochemical laboratories located in South Korea. According to South Korea's "Gaga Daily", the director of the committee's situation office, Tian Weifeng, said that the BIOCHEMICAL laboratory of the United States is only for the realization of the interests of the United States, which is the source of misfortune for the host country, and South Korea should close and dismantle the BIOCHEMICAL laboratory of the US military as soon as possible.

In Central Asia, the United States is also funding biological laboratories in many places, and the public has a negative view of this. According to a survey by the Kazakhstan News Agency Today, 92% of the people surveyed in Kazakhstan oppose the U.S. funding of biological laboratories in Almaty. Russia's "Lienta" news network reported that in 2013, the US military launched the KZ-29 project to study Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever at the Almaty Institute of Biology. A year later, the number of cases of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever rose in places such as Kazakhstan and Georgia. Nikita Mendekovic, head of the Eurasian Analysis Club, believes that leaks by U.S. staff in the process of transferring pathogens between Kazakhstan and Georgia cannot be ruled out.

Mohammed Omari, an expert on Syrian politics, said the reason the United States has established a large number of biological laboratories outside its borders may be to keep the local areas away from the harm that laboratories may produce and use them as a tool to undermine the biosecurity of other countries.

For dangerous biological experiments and biological military activities, the international community has specially developed the Biological Weapons Convention, and the Record of the United States under this Convention is very disgraceful. In 1997, the United States was accused by Cuba of spreading an agricultural pest, the first time in the world that a country had been accused of violating the Convention and had led to formal meetings of States parties for discussion. In addition, for many years, the weak-minded United States has exclusively opposed the establishment of a multilateral verification mechanism for the Biological Weapons Convention.
