On December 27th, the symposium on the publication of a new book on calligraphy theory, "Introduction to calligraphy philosophy", sponsored by Hubei Provincial Federation of Literature, Hubei Calligraphers Association and Calligraphy Newspaper, and jointly organized by Huangshi Literary Association and Huangshi Calligraphers Association, was held in Wuhan.

It is understood that "Introduction to the Philosophy of Calligraphy" was published by RongBaozhai Publishing House, and was written by Huang Xuehu, a Hubei calligrapher, a member of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, and a master of philosophy of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, over many years.

The book is divided into nine chapters, from a philosophical point of view, explores the origin and adaptation of Chinese characters as the basis of calligraphy, and philosophically interprets the points, lines, surfaces, shape structures in calligraphy, as well as artistic issues such as brushwork, calligraphy, chapters, and ink.

"Writing a book is an accident and an inevitability. Although calligraphy and Chinese characters cannot be equated, Chinese characters, calligraphy and calligraphy philosophy coexist symbiotically. Therefore, the study of the fundamental and core problems of calligraphy theory is certainly inseparable from philosophical issues. The philosophy of calligraphy and art is a towering tree that grows on the high ground of the philosophy of art, and has flourished for thousands of years. For his new book, Huang Xuehu revealed that in 2020, he used the time of "fighting the epidemic" at home to comprehensively and systematically think and sort out the philosophical calligraphy problems that he wanted to write for many years but did not write.

The symposium was presided over by Li Jinsong, vice chairman and secretary general of the Hubei Calligraphers Association, Liu Hongbiao, vice chairman of the Seventh China Calligraphers Association, Ma Shangyun, member of the party group and vice chairman of the Hubei Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Meng Qingxing, chairman of the Hubei Calligraphers Association, and dozens of other leaders and experts in the field of calligraphy in the country attended the event, and made detailed discussions around the "Introduction to the Philosophy of Calligraphy".

In Liu Hongbiao's view, "a calligrapher should actually be a simple philosopher. We are calligraphers in the era of art, if there is no philosophical thinking, no dialectical thinking, the creation of calligraphy art is very difficult. Weight, speed, tight opening and closing, length and weakness, etc., all things are a pair of contradictions, and a random example can arrange hundreds of contradictions and opposites of a large number of calligraphy arts. A calligraphy artist, if he does not have dialectical philosophical thinking, if he does not have this ability, how can you go above ordinary writing? ”

Including Liu Hongbiao, the participating experts affirmed the significance and value of the publication of "Introduction to the Philosophy of Calligraphy" to the development of contemporary calligraphy art and the construction of contemporary calligraphy creation teams. "Based on Chinese cultural traditions, the ideological system of discussing the philosophy of calligraphy plays an important role."
