In the early days, Zhang Liao was subordinate to Ding Yuan, Dong Zhuo, and Lü Bu. After Lü Bu's defeat and death, he submitted to Cao Cao. After that, he accompanied Cao Cao everywhere to negotiate, and he made great achievements in battle.

After the Battle of Wusu, Zhang Liao, Together with Li Dian and Le Jin, defended Hefei and repeatedly repelled Sun Wu's attacks. After Cao Pi ascended the throne, he still ordered Zhang Liao to guard the imperial grandson power. In the second year of the Huang Dynasty (221), Zhang Liaotun was stationed in Yongqiu and became ill. During Zhang Liao's serious illness, Sun Quan was still very jealous of him. In the third year of the Huang Dynasty (222), Zhang Liao lived up to the expectations of the people and defeated the Wu general Lü Fan with illness.

When Lü Meng was a teenager, he was attached to his sister-in-law Deng Dang and followed Sun Ce as a general. He was known for his courage and was enfeoffed as a sima of the other departments. In the first year of the Huanglong Dynasty (229), Sun Quan was proclaimed empress dowager, with Lu Xun as the general and assistant crown prince Sun Deng.

In 263, he and Zhong Hui led separate armies to attack Shu Han, and finally he took the lead in entering Chengdu, causing the shu Han to perish.

Deng Ai had a far-sighted vision in the war, superhuman insights, and a rare strategic acumen.
