Co-sponsored by the National Art Museum of China and the Nanjing Museum, the "Mirror-like Photography of The Divine Form- The Exhibition of Ming and Qing Portraits from the Collection of the National Art Museum of China and the Nanjing Museum" was launched at the National Art Museum of China.
The exhibition selects more than 100 pieces (sets) of portrait works from the collections of the National Art Museum of China and the Nanjing Museum, and is divided into two parts, the Ming and Qing dynasties, in chronological order. The works in the exhibition present the different forms, functions and techniques of portraiture, showing the artistic achievements of the development of portrait painting in the Ming and Qing dynasties in China.
Wu Weishan, member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, director of the National Art Museum of China and vice chairman of the China Artists Association, introduced that "traditional portrait painting reached its peak in the Ming and Qing dynasties for its own reasons", "It is worth mentioning that the mutual learning between China and the West embodied in Ming and Qing portrait paintings is a process of absorption and acceptance based on local aesthetics." The painter's calmness and tolerance, self-consciousness and self-confidence in cultural attitude make this process 'Western' rather than 'Westernized', becoming an aesthetic transmutation based on active cultural choices."
Portraiture is a form of painting that records the physical appearance of a person, which is both functional and ornamental. Portrait painting in China has a long history, appearing as early as the Spring and Autumn Period. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, along with the development of the market economy and urban commerce, a number of outstanding painters such as Zeng Whale, Yu Zhiding and Xu Zhang emerged. On the basis of inheriting traditional techniques, they expanded the subject matter, forms of expression and creative techniques of portraiture.
It is reported that the exhibition will be exhibited in Halls 19, 20 and 21 of the National Art Museum of China and will be on display until January 16, 2022.
