Despite global electrification Volkswagen will not abandon diesel engines

Volkswagen officially announced that its latest generation of four-cylinder diesel engines has been approved to use paraffin fuel, a newly developed diesel fuel with a biocomputer. According to automakers, the use of paraffin fuel should significantly reduce carbon emissions – about 70-95% compared to conventional diesel.

Volkswagen also said that all Volkswagen models with four-cylinder diesel engines (TDI) delivered since the end of June this year have been approved to run with paraffin diesel in accordance with the European standard EN 15940. These models include the Tiguan TDI, as well as the GTD version of the eighth-generation Golf.

"By using eco-friendly fuels in approved Volkswagen models, we are enabling customers across Europe to significantly reduce their CO2 emissions immediately after they receive fuel locally. For example, the use of paraffin fuel can be used for large companies with electric and conventional gasoline engines, which can further reduce fuel consumption. Professor Thomas Garbe, head of gasoline and diesel fuel at Volkswagen, said.

Paraffin fuel is made from biological residues and waste materials such as hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO). These biofuels, such as HVO, are already on the market and are expected to increase their share of the European energy market to 20 to 30 percent over the next decade. Examples of paraffin diesel fuels already on the market are C.A.R.E diesel, NEXTBTL and HVO.

In addition, there are a variety of diesel fuels on the market, which are oils that can be burned with paraffin wax. These are said to meet the requirements of the standard EN590. Examples include Diesel R33, V-Power Diesel, OMV MaxMotion, and Aral Ultimate Diesel. All diesel engines, including older ones, can use the latter diesel with a paraffin component added.
