Origins
The "Novel Monthly" inscribed by Mr. Mao Dun is the earliest literary anthology founded in China, and it has won the recognition and love of readers at home and abroad with the style of elegant and popular appreciation. Since its inception in 1980, almost all the famous works of young and middle-aged writers that have emerged in the new period have become popular through the timely selection and promotion of "Novel Monthly", resulting in one literary sensational effect after another. With a maximum circulation of 1.6 million copies, it still ranks first in the circulation of literary periodicals in the country and has a very extensive and far-reaching social influence.
Novel Monthly has won the first "National Periodical Award", the second "National Periodical Award", the third "National Periodical Award Nomination Award", the second "China Publishing Government Award Journal Nomination Award", was rated as the first and second "National 100 Key Social Science Journals" by the State Administration of Press and Publication, and was continuously selected as one of the "Top 100 Social Science Journals" in China in 2013, 2015 and 2017. Novel Monthly founded the "Hundred Flowers Award" in 1984, and readers voted for outstanding novels. Relying on the well-known literary journal platform, in 1984, "Novel Monthly" held the first "Hundred Flowers Award" selection, which achieved an unprecedented and enthusiastic social response, and was criticized by the media at the time as "a large-scale poll" on contemporary novels. Since then, the "Hundred Flowers Award" of "Novel Monthly" has been selected every two years, which has been widely concerned by writers, critics, editors and all sectors of society across the country, the vast number of enthusiastic readers have actively participated in the voting, the news media has actively reported the results of the award, and each "Hundred Flowers Award" award ceremony has also become a grand event in the Chinese literary circle that has attracted much attention. Chi Li, a writer who has won the "Hundred Flowers Award" for many times, once told the news media: "Although I have won dozens of literary awards at home and abroad, I have always attached more importance to the 'Hundred Flowers Award' of Novel Monthly, and only the 'Hundred Flowers Award' can let me touch the pulse of today's readers and the market." In 2015, the 16th "Hundred Flowers Award" was selected to add the "Prose Award" and upgraded to the "Hundred Flowers Literature Award". In 2017, the 17th "Hundred Flowers Literature Award" added the "Film and Television Drama Adaptation Value Award" to promote the film and television adaptation of outstanding literary works. In 2019, the 18th "Hundred Flowers Literature Award" added the "Science Fiction Literature Award" to become a comprehensive literary award covering novels, essays, science fiction literature, film and television literature, etc.
