He Yun, Chiang Kai-shek's "stand-in": from a vegetable farmer to a major general, he was forced to live in seclusion for life, and died of poverty and illness

In the political arena of the Republic of China, assassinations are a common practice, political views are not compatible, and there will be assassination incidents.

After the establishment of the National Government in Nanjing, both Song Ziwen and Chiang Kai-shek were assassinated by Wang Yaqiao, who was known as the "Great King of assassination by the Republic of China."

Wang Yaqiao has long insisted on launching a labor movement in Shanghai, and his "Axe Gang" is well known; he once organized troops in Shanghai and Anhui to vigorously support Chiang Kai-shek's Northern Expedition, but after Chiang Kai-shek launched the April 12 coup in 1927, he saw that Chiang Kai-shek had colluded with reactionary warlords to suppress the workers' and peasants' movement, so he formally broke with Chiang Kai-shek and rejected Chiang Kai-shek's proposal to invite him to a prominent post.

In 1929, Wang Yaqiao organized the "Three Route Army Rebellion against Chiang Kai-shek", but was defeated by being whistleblowed by traitors, and Yu Likui and Fang Zhenwu, who organized the anti-Chiang struggle with him, were imprisoned in the Nanjing Army Prison.

Ming's failure, Wang Yaqiao came to the dark, he opposed Chiang Kai-shek for ten years, stabbed Chiang Five times, and frightened Chiang Kai-shek.

On June 14, 1931, Wang Yaqiao sent someone to stab Chiang Kai-shek at Lushan Mountain, but because the assassin Chen Cheng's shot was not accurate enough, he did not hit Chiang Kai-shek.

On November 1, 1935, after a year-long and meticulous plan, Wang Yaqiao's men sent the patriotic hero Sun Fengming to enter the meeting site of the Sixth Plenary Session of the Fourth Central Committee of the Kuomintang as a reporter, intending to shoot and kill Chiang Kai-shek with a poison bullet at the opening ceremony when the members of the Kuomintang Central Committee took a group photo.

At that time, Chiang Kai-shek, seeing that the scene was chaotic and the number of people taking photos was too large, hid in the lounge alone under the pretext of being unwell, and Sun Fengming could not find Chiang Kai-shek, and he could not miss this opportunity that had been prepared for a long time, so he could only retreat to the second place and shoot Wang Jingwei three times in a row, causing Wang Jingwei to be seriously injured and dying.

Although Sun Fengming would rather die than confess, Chiang Kai-shek still understood that the assassins were coming for him, and on the one hand, he sent Dai Kasa to track down Wang Yaqiao's whereabouts, and on the other hand, he asked people to find a "stand-in" to help him appear in public to avoid Wang Yaqiao's assassination.

Chen Lifu proposed several candidates for him, but Chiang Kai-shek was not satisfied, and later, he remembered He Yun, an instructor at the Whampoa Military Academy, who was a native of Hangzhou and had a body and face that was somewhat similar to his. Chen Lifu immediately found someone to take a picture of He Yun, and felt that this person was indeed very similar to Chiang Kai-shek, with facial contours, facial features and even eyes, which were similar to Chiang Kai-shek' and Zhejiang accents.

He Yun

So Chen Lifu urgently sent someone to find He Yun, who was the chief of the Hangzhou Police, and asked him to serve as Chiang Kai-shek's "stand-in."

1, hard imitation, to fake the real

He Yun was born in 1886, a native of Yanzhou, Zhejiang (Jiande County, now Meicheng Town, Jiande City, Hangzhou), he was born in poverty, worked as a vegetable farmer for several years when he was a teenager, and later was admitted to the Zhejiang Army Lecture School and the Japanese Army Non-Commissioned Officer School, and after graduation, he served as a probationary company commander of the Zhejiang Army and a deputy of the Second Mixed Brigade Battalion.

In 1924, He Yun went to Guangzhou, where he first served as an instructor at the Army Lecture School of the Military and Political Department of the Base Camp, then as a lieutenant colonel instructor at the Huangpu Military Academy, and after the Northern Expedition, he served as the deputy commander of the First Division of the Zhejiang Provincial Garrison, and from 1933 he was the chief of the Hangzhou Municipal Police.

He Yun's age and experience are similar to Chiang Kai-shek's, but his official fortunes are slightly worse, and when he was still in the Whampoa Military Academy, teachers and students often said that he looked similar to Chiang Kai-shek, and also left a deep impression on Chiang Kai-shek.

Chiang Kai-shek

After receiving Chen Lifu's call, He Yun did not dare to be idle and rushed to Nanjing.

Chen Lifu told He Yun that chiang kai-shek planned to send the central army into Sichuan in order to control the warlords in Sichuan and Guizhou and to join forces to encircle and suppress the Red Army in the Sichuan-Shaanxi border area, and Chiang Kai-shek himself also wanted to inspect it. Therefore, he was needed to serve as a stand-in for Chiang Kai-shek and enter Sichuan with Chiang Kai-shek in case of an accident.

Therefore, He Yun stayed behind, first serving in Chiang Kai-shek's attendant room, and he followed Chiang Kai-shek around, watching chairman Chiang Kai-shek's words, deeds, and action details, and after work, he repeatedly practiced and carefully imitated the things recorded during the day.

He Yun when he was a stand-in

Although the appearance is similar, but to fake the truth, it is not easy, Chiang Kai-shek is speaking in the Fenghua dialect of eastern Zhejiang, while He Yun's hometown is in southwest Zhejiang, the dialect pronunciation and idiomatic language are very different, Chiang Kai-shek's movements are rigid and slow, in addition to fish, the meal is mainly vegetarian, basically do not touch the meat, and He Yun eats fast and does not pay attention.

Chiang Kai-shek also hoped that He Yun, a "shadow warrior," would be able to cover his ears and ears, and when he had time, he would make small talk with him and teach He Yun a few words of Fenghua accent.

Half a month later, Chen Lifu asked He Yun to conduct a "test form" examination, appeared as Chairman Chiang Kai-shek at the inspection of the limited number of guards, and spoke at the same day, He Yun came to the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, he was dressed in the uniform of a special general, draped in the black dagger that Chiang Kai-shek often wore, hung a large row of meritorious medals on his chest, wore a short Japanese beard exactly like Chiang Kai-shek, and conducted an hour of training and review, and as a result, none of the soldiers at the scene found any flaws, and even Song Meiling, who was standing not far away, did not find that the chairman of the committee next to him was pretending to be a stand-in.

After that, He Yun followed Chiang Kai-shek to Sichuan and Qianqian, and some places that made Chiang Kai-shek feel unsafe appeared in front of everyone in the form of Chairman Chiang Kai-shek.

The trip to the southwest made Chiang Kai-shek very satisfied, but soon after returning to Nanjing, He Yun was still shelved; first, he Chinese speak badly, the dialect was too heavy, and it sounded obscure; second, Song Meiling felt awkward about the two extremely similar Chiang Kai-shek who always appeared in front of him, believing that He Yun was uneducated and of poor quality, and that it was difficult for him to take up the post of "chairman of the committee" and affect Chiang Kai-shek's image.

Therefore, in 1937, He Yun was transferred out of the attendant room and sent to the Military Senate as a major general, he did not have to go to Nanjing to work, only lived in Hangzhou, received a high salary as a reward, for confidentiality, He Yun was asked not to mention the matter of being a stand-in.

2. Reduced to a commoner, died in poverty

Acting as a stand-in for Chiang Kai-shek brought He Yun the luck of being promoted to major general by leaps and bounds, but it also brought about later difficulties.

In 1933, before becoming a "stand-in", He Yungang was promoted from the chief of the Hangzhou Police to the inspector general of the Shanghai Police Department, and if he continued to work step by step, he could also become a senior military and police officer, and after being a stand-in, Chen Lifu did not allow him to return to the government as a public official, and asked He Yun to return to Hangzhou to live in seclusion.

After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in 1937, the National Government in Nanjing moved to Chongqing, He Yun's salary was no longer paid, and He Yun, who was middle-aged, soon fell into poverty, and he wrote to Chen Lifu and Chiang Kai-shek many times, wanting to restore public office, go to Chongqing to serve or go to the anti-Japanese front, but the letter was like a stone sinking into the sea, and he could not get any reply at all.

In 1938, after the fall of Zhejiang, He Yun fled from Jiande County to Chun'an County, and soon after, Chun'an County also fell, and the pseudo-county government posted notices, and the traitors who defected to the enemy took the opportunity to extort and extort money, and forcibly demanded "great East Asian jihad military salaries" from all villages and townships, which brought a great burden to the local people.

Therefore, he disguised himself a little, took a few attachés, and went to the county capital to find the pseudo-county chief, who saw that the "chairman of the committee" actually came to the door to inquire, and thought that the nationalist army had returned to Zhejiang. He Yun immediately reprimanded him, asking the pseudo-county magistrate to tear up the notice and exempt him from military pay, thus saving the local people from a disaster.

This incident once became a "good story" for He Yun, but after the news spread, He Yun was worried that he would be found by the enemy and the hypocrites from then on, and fled to the southwest rear, wandering for many years.

After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945, He Yun returned to Zhejiang and settled in Hangzhou, at this time, he held a glimmer of hope and kept writing letters to Chen Lifu and Chiang Kai-shek, but still did not get a reply. Knowing that he had long since lost his use value and would be forgotten by Chiang Kai-shek, he could not help but say with emotion: "I was the 'chairman of the committee', but now the chairman of the committee does not recognize me!" ”

Soon after, his daughter He Linling was resolutely opposed by her family because of her teacher-student love, and for a moment she couldn't think straight, and even hanged herself at home, He Yun and his wife were in great pain, and then fell ill, at this time the price soared, and He Yun had no income for many years, could not make ends meet, and could only rely on pawns for a living.

Just when he was terminally ill, in June 1947, he suddenly received a letter from the Military Commission of the Nanjing government to award him the rank of major general again, and at this time He Yun was already dying and could not even speak, and a few months later, the 61-year-old He Yun died of illness in his hometown of Jiande County, and also buried a little-known secret history.
