"Yue" through "Yue", the vast land from Vietnam to Jiangsu and Zhejiang in ancient times, is a Baiyue ethnic settlement, located in the Liangguang area of Lingnan inhabited by many Baiyue ancestors. After the Unification of China by the Qin Dynasty, the Han Chinese in the Central Plains began to migrate south to Lingnan in small numbers, and a large number of them began to move south from the Yiguan Nandu of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, in addition to avoiding war, the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms and the Southern Song Dynasty were also the peak of migration, they lived with the local Baiyue people and intermarried, and also brought the Culture and Language of the Central Plains. According to historical research, the first Central Plains people to enter Lingnan were non-commissioned officers of the Qin Dynasty, who were distributed at that time in the area where the two cantons meet, that is, Zhaoqing in Guangdong or Wuzhou in Guangxi, and are generally believed to be the birthplace of Cantonese.

However, with the establishment of Nanhai County, Guangzhou began to become the central city of Lingnan, and has been the political, economic, transportation and cultural center of Lingnan for more than 2,000 years. Therefore, the current Cantonese must be based on Guangzhou dialect, just like Mandarin is based on Beijing pronunciation.
