In 1953, he joined the army and came to the unit where Yang Gensi was born

In December 1952, Yang Gensi's unit, the 58th Division of the 20th Army, returned home from Korea in triumph. After resting in Suzhou, the troops were stationed in eastern Zhejiang and took on coastal defense tasks, and the division headquarters was located in Cicheng, Ningbo. In March 1953, the army came to the school to recruit special recruits, and Gui Zhong, who was studying at Cixi Jintang Normal School, signed up to join the army and became one of the first volunteers to join the army after the return of the volunteer army.

After training in the divisional headquarters cultural and educational training team, Gui Zhongzhong was assigned to serve as a cultural instructor in the 5th Company of the 2nd Battalion of the 172nd Regiment stationed in Changting, Fenghua, which was close to the station of the 1st Battalion and 3rd Company "Yang Gensi Company". Later, due to his work relationship, he often went to the "Yang Gensi Company" to carry out cultural and educational activities, so he had more opportunities to listen to the volunteer veterans tell the story of the special hero Yang Gensi.

Gui Zhongzhong told reporters that what impressed him most was that yang Gensi, at the mobilization meeting before going to the DPRK for the battle, put forward to the soldiers the spirit of "three unbeliefs": They did not believe that there were tasks that could not be completed, did not believe that there were difficulties that could not be overcome, and did not believe that there were enemies that could not be defeated. This "three noes spirit" has also become An ideological weapon for Gui Zhong to overcome difficulties in his post.

At Gui's home, there is a large chorus book called "Yang Gensi" compiled and printed by the Cultural and Labor Troupe of the Political Department of the East China Military Region. In 1955, after his first exposure to this sheet music, he fell in love with it and often learned to sing. In the interview, Gui Zhong also sang the third song praising Yang Gensi's fighting friendship affectionately: "You got up from the bomb crater, smiled, crawled to our side through the vast wind and snow, dear company commander, crawled to us through the vast wind and snow." You said to us..."

In 1956, the front-line drama troupe of the military region came to Fenghua to offer condolences and performed a drama "Yang Gensi" in five acts and seven plays. After I watched it, the most touching episode was a few lyrics of Yang Gensi's farewell to his sister-in-law to join the army: "The peach blossom village in front of the village, the sister-in-law, don't worry, I remember your words..." I especially like this song, and I often sing it to the soldiers in the army. Gui said affectionately.

In Gui's memory, he first participated in the rehearsal of a program singing Yang Gensi in 1959. At that time, Gui Zhong, who served as the director of the political department of the 173rd Regiment, formed the 58th Division Soldier Amateur Performance Team together with the cultural cadres of the 172nd Regiment. Under the guidance of the members of the military, cultural and industrial troupe, a large-scale acura Yang Gensi program "Singing Glorious Regiment" was rehearsed.

He recalled: "At that time, we sang the revolutionary songs that the 172nd Regiment had been singing from the beginning of the founding of the regiment to various historical periods, and performed them in various forms. The climax of the show is to highlight Yang Gensi's heroic feats, and finally ends with Yang Gensi holding up the explosive package and rushing to the enemy group. I was playing the accordion to accompany the chorus. Later, we participated in the military literary and artistic performance in this program and received praise. Subsequently, he was also selected as the opening song performance program of the 20th Army performance team, participated in the military region's meeting, and then the military region organized a group to go to Beijing to participate in the all-army literary and artistic performance. At that time, we used this form to show the glorious image of the hero Yang Gensi, which was the first time on the stage of the capital. Therefore, the evaluation is very high, and the impact is also great. ”

After returning from the Beijing performance, the adjusted amateur performance team of the soldiers of the 20th Army first went to Zhenhai to participate in the condolence performance, and then from Zhoushan, Wenzhou, Jiaxing, and all the way to Shanghai, Hangzhou, Huzhou and other troop garrisons. It lasted for three months, and everywhere we went, we were warmly welcomed by the vast number of commanders and fighters. During the performance, at the invitation of the Shanghai Theater Academy, he went to the school to give a special performance. Xiong Foxi, the pioneer and founder of Chinese drama and the then president of the Shanghai Theater Academy, was very touched to see the performance of the yang gensi program, not only praised it, but also excitedly embraced our performing team members. Gui said with a smile.

In the nearly 30 years of enlistment, Gui Zhongzhong has always attached importance to literary and artistic creations and performances with the theme of Yang Gensi's heroic deeds in the propaganda and cultural posts of the 58th Division of the 20th Army. Praising Yang Gensi and publicizing Yang Gensi have also become the mission and motivation that motivates him to continue to move forward.

After retiring, he has been preaching the deeds of heroes

In late November 1980, Gui Zhong, who was about to change careers, as the chief of the cultural section of the division's political department, led the cultural officers to the 172nd Regiment to investigate cultural work, and once again specially went to the "Yang Gensilian" to participate in the company's literary and artistic evening, and also happily sang the song "Me and the Squad Leader": "The squad leader plays the piano, I sing, the singing is like a small river, first sing the scenery of our hometown is good, and then sing the heroes of our company..." He bid farewell to "Yang Gensilian" with a passionate singing voice, and also bid farewell to his upcoming military career.

At the end of the interview, Gui Zhongzhong also showed reporters two teapots in his treasure: one was the tea jar given to him by his comrades-in-arms, which was the spoils of war captured by a Sichuan veteran from the enemy during the 5th Battle of The War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea; the other was a teacup for the Chinese Volunteer Army, which was printed with "gifted to the loveliest person." Gui Zhong told reporters that although he did not participate in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, because he served in the heroic unit, he was also fortunate to be given one. "They (two cups) not only carry the memories of my youth, but seeing them makes me unforgettable to the heroic hymn of the mighty mountains and rivers composed by the 'cutest people'!" Gui said emotionally.

After his transfer, Gui Zhong returned to Ningbo to work and retired as the principal of Cihu Middle School. Speaking of his past military career, Gui Zhongzhong was full of emotions, saying that he had been retired from the heroic unit for 40 years, but the glorious image and heroic deeds of the special hero Yang Gensi have always remained in his heart. A few years ago, when he went to Shanghai to participate in the commemorative activities of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, he was both happy and relieved to see the veteran troops performing a program praising Yang Gensi on the spot.

As a 60-year-old party member and veteran soldier, he told reporters that his greatest wish in recent years is not to forget his original intention, keep in mind his mission as a "party history propagandist," make good use of red resources, tell heroic stories, and pass on Yang Gensi's revolutionary spirit from generation to generation...
