Starting in 2023, the central government's forestry reform and development fund will invest 21.75 million yuan in two phases to build an intelligent video surveillance system in the Baohei-necked Crane National Nature Reserve in Dashan, Yunnan. Recently, the (Phase I) project has been put into use, and the core area of black-necked crane wintering has achieved 24-hour synchronous real-time monitoring.

Located in Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve, it is one of the reserves with the largest wintering population of black-necked cranes in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, providing an important wintering ground and transit station for black-necked cranes and many rare and endangered wintering migratory birds. Monitoring black-necked cranes and grasping key information such as their range, frequency, and biodiversity status is an important measure to protect black-necked cranes. The monitoring of black-necked cranes, as early as the 90s of the 20th century, was an important work of the reserve.

Zheng Yuanjian, a staff member of the Management and Conservation Bureau of Yunnan Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve

In the 90s of the 20th century, when the reserve was first established, we mainly monitored the black-necked cranes by walking into the wetlands and approaching them to see how they were doing. This has a downside, if we are too far away, we can't see clearly. If you get too close, too close to the black-necked crane, it will disturb the crane flock a little bit, and it will fly away.

In order to reduce the interference of the black-necked crane, the staff used telescopes, telescopes, and binoculars to monitor the black-necked cranes, but the data obtained were still not accurate enough. In this regard, starting in 2023, the central government will allocate 3.75 million yuan for the first phase of the construction of the intelligent platform of the reserve.

The monitoring point in the first phase uses solar and wind energy to store electricity for this function. The whole project is currently being constructed in two phases, and the first phase has achieved the removal of human interference within a controllable range.

At present, the main habitat of the black-necked crane has been built with 5 high-definition cameras with 5G technology, an intelligent management center and a forest and grass fire prevention system, which can monitor the core area of the black-necked crane wintering in a 24-hour "do not disturb" mode, with a monitoring range of more than 600 acres.

The bayonet behind me is part of the intelligent construction of the reserve, and its main function is to monitor and identify the personnel and vehicles entering the reserve. The personnel and vehicles that have been pulled into the blacklist will once again enter the protected area, and the background will give an early warning.

In 2024, the central government will also invest 18 million yuan to build the second phase of the intelligent video surveillance system, add 23 high-definition cameras and build front-end perception, environmental factor collection, drone patrol, thermal imaging electronic boundary post and other systems, and the monitoring range will be increased to 5,000 acres.

Geng Daifu, Chief of the Ecotourism Section of the Management and Conservation Bureau of Yunnan Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve

After the completion of the first and second phases of intelligent construction, we can realize the monitoring of the "sky, air and ground" of birds in the reserve, automatically monitor the environment, species, hydrology, sound and image, collect video data, and transmit this information to the terminal. After terminal collection and analysis, the number, distribution and living habits of birds can be accurately obtained, and scientific analysis will be carried out for the study of black-necked cranes and their protected birds, as well as our key wetlands, so as to comprehensively improve the protection and management of black-necked cranes and their birds in the reserve.
